Ketia0 0 #1 November 17, 2009 Im pretty ticked off right now.... I have been doing paperwork alll morning, and decide to take a 5 minute break and go into the bathroom and catch up on a little reading..This guy I work with who obviously has beef with younger people gives me crap about it, and says he hopes I get fired! I Love my job. I love what I do. And even more I love the pay. But the people here are JERKS!! Actually.. Its only like 6 ot 8 people... but they are REALLY jerks... And I think one of the biggest things they dont like is my age... I hired on here at 19 Y.O... The youngest guy in the refinery! I had started college full time right after my sophmore year in highschool... So I think age has alot to do with it... I worked really hard to get this job, and I do it right... But when I do things that I "Havent earned the privelage/been here long enough" to do... They get mad... I.E. ( Napping, reading, playing on internet)... But get this crap.. A guy who is about 33 just hired in on our unit... And this dude is on the internet more than me, and they all talk and joke with him... And he JUST started 2 months ago! He is barely qualified on the unit! And he has been doing this for a while! This day is getting crappy fast! "In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds. JohnMitchell 16 #2 November 17, 2009 Office politics, office interactions can get very complicated. Hopefully your real boss is not one of these goofballs. Sounds like you work in an office where everyone is 30's to 40's, likes fishing, golfing, beer and pro football, and here you are, young single pup, not shaving yet, and skydiving to boot. Yep, I'd say you're on the outside looking in. Maybe time to go super low profile, but that cuts you out on the day to day interaction that's part of every job. Dunno. Have you talked to your boss about it, especially the guy that wants to see you fired?
Andrewwhyte 1 #3 November 17, 2009 Here's an idea. Stop napping, reading, playing on the internet and work hard the whole day long. Then when you are his boss you can stop worrying about him.

If he says he hopes you get fired, it's obvious he has no real authority that would involve him in that decision. His napping, reading, and playing on the internet probably has something to do with that. F*ck 'em. Worry about your job, let them keep doing what they're doing. With the current economy, slacking at work is not something you want to be doing anyway.
d_squared431 0 #6 November 17, 2009 How old are you compared to the other guys you work with? I have worked in medical offices that the other staff members would stab you in the back to make themselves look better. I was laid off from one office and then 2-3months later I was asked to come back and given a large increase because the owner had found the two other staff members were taking money and not billing anyone. I ended up working in that office for 6 and a half yrs after that. I wasnt even pissed I was laid off cause it was the start of winter I had a pass, enough money i didnt have to work, and could collect unemployment TPM Sister#130ONTIG#1 I love vodka.I love vodka cause it rhymes with Tuaca~LisaH You having a clean thought is like billyvance having a clean post.iluvtofly
Misternatural 0 #7 November 17, 2009 Dude, it doesn't get any better the older you get-sorry to say. Working a job will give you the opportunity to deal with all sorts of assholes-thats life. I now work for myself it's great and gives you the freedom to deal with whoever you choose- the downside is you have the freedom to starve to death as well. Your best bet is to be smart about your off duty fuckery. Dont mind the assholes-you have plenty of time ahead of you to get use to them, after a while they are just a chirp in the distance. oh also if you need tips ask Deedy she's the goddess of getting work done and working the internet at the same time Beware of the collateralizing and monetization of your desires. Ketia0 0 #8 November 17, 2009 Its not really slacking... Just when things get slow.. Sometimes there really isnt anything to do... As for the guy that wants to see me fired, he isnt my boss. But he is about to be our Chief... I dont know yet what all the entails.. Because it is still a Union position, I dont think he can discipline me.. I have never had to be discpline by My supervisor ( My main boss, non union)... They all like me, and know I get all my work and then some done.. He just doesnt like it that I do the same thing he does and im young... Thats my assumption.. And no, I havent talked to my supervisor about it, cause that would be bad... ( Going to the company to complain about a Union Brother).. Sometimes the Union REALLY ticks me off too!!!! And yea, They all drink and have parties.. But they know I dont drink.. I prettu much stay bymyself when im here, unless my very few freinds are here... "In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds. The new guy that just hired in and gets better treatment than me.. i ust found out he is 40... "In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds. wmw999 2,544 #11 November 17, 2009 Find something you can legitimately ask the asshole for advice about that's not work-related, and then clearly take the advice. It'll help his perception of himself, without hurting you at work. For instance, the name of a good mechanic, or a restaurant in town where you can take a girl, or (if he's a car guy) how to change out a radiator, or something like that. Something a guy could ask another guy for advice about, without it sounding like a "yes, John-boy" moment You don't want to make it work-related unless you're really, really careful, because then he can cement in his mind that you don't belong there. jtnesbitt 0 #18 November 17, 2009 Unfortunately things like this happen and you just have to deal with it the most professional way. At 25 I am the youngest person in my company. Besides the 27 year old sales person I just hired the next youngest person is 33. This compounded with the fact that everyone except the owner has to report to me and I was promoted over people much older and with more seniority made things a little tricky for a while. I had to tread extra careful to make sure I was a good manager, did my job, and kept everyone happy. If I had been older this prob wouldn't have proved to be as difficult. The problem with keeping people happy is many resented me for being young, having less experience with the company, yet holding the positions I did and especially the position I hold now. Every now and then i still have to deal with it a little, but they are just jokes now, whereas before they were still jokes but they weren't meant as jokes. The way I got past everything was just doing th best job I could do, and paid extra special attention to people. Even though i didn't always want to I was extra outgoing, made chit chat with people i didn't like and knew didn't like me, and most importantly of all showed that I was not afraid to get my hands dirty. I helped with things that didn't fall within my responsibility and and made sure everyone knew i wouldnt ask someone to do something i wasn't willing to do myself. If someone knows you are willing to go the extra mile, then they are likely not going to give you shit for taking a breather every now and then. No one says a word to me anymore if I decide to come in a half hour late, because they know I will be the last one to leave the office much later than everyone else. My advice would be this: be extra nice to the guy. True, you don't have to, but it could make your life a lot easier. Especially since it looks like this guy might be your supervisor in the near future. Try asking him questions about work, even if you already know the answer. (Just make sure its not stuff you are SUPPOSED to already know.) This way they can see that you value and respect their opinion. A little respect combined with a feeling of worth really goes a long way with people."If this post needs to be moderated I would prefer it to be completly removed and not edited and butchered into a disney movie" - DorkZone Hero

Ketia0 0 #20 November 17, 2009 Quade, Read the response before you deleted it... Yes I know about this countries current economic crisis. I know MANY people would love, and some kill, to have my job. The reason the guy got mad wasnt due to my slacking off. Because it is something we all do. Its not something that is done alot nor consistently. Every job has breaks. I choose to read on my break. This obviously was not acceptable. Meh. Im over it now. And no.. Theres not always something to do... Also, that reply was kind of harsh... If people were always complacent and not trying to improve thier situations because " I have it better than others"... Well.. We wouldnt be to advanced as a society would we? I deleted it myself because I looked at it and thought it was just a little harsh, but I guess you were able to see it in the 30 or seconds it was up. Anyway, I think they're doing you a favor. Ketia0 0 #23 November 17, 2009 I edited my post... Im not doing anything that they themselves dont already do... I understand that jobs are hard to come by in some places.. But in all honesty.. Texas, atleast Houston area, has not really felt the economic hardships. We still have companies around here that are hiring for $30+ a hour... Its not a boom, but we are able to hold ourselves... Reminds me of an old famous quote I love... "Texas can survive without the US, but the US can't survive without Texas" "In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds.
