Anyone ever use them? Trying to get an idea of what it would run for a moving company to pack, load, transport and unload about 5000lbs of stuff, travel at max 1200 miles. No vehicle will be transported....ummmm....think that about covers it.

The moving industry has been around ever since people have been moving

Google it and I think you'll find there is some federal regulation if your moving interstate. Gov't generated cheeck lists
to avoid some of the standard scams.

The feds are busy folks so instead of relying on the feds to clean up a moving horror story after the fact. Do your research up front so you'll know how to protect yourself as much as possible so when you do get screwed you'll have a clean claim.

Think of a mover the same as a army recruiter.

Best to stick with the big names! They cost more than bargain movers, but they will make a price and stick to it, and are Bonded! Like Mayflower! JMO

I've done cross-country moves (2000 & 3000 miles) w/~5k lbs stuff; I have lots of books. The only difference from your scenario is I've done my own packing. Both cost less than $3K. The 3000 mile move cost $2600 in Aug 2005.

A 650 mile move with 7500 lbs was $3K in Aug 2007. Gas surcharge at the time added a couple hundred.

In all scenarios the companies have found ways to tack on additional $250 to $500 charges but nothing that I felt was criminal.

Just an FYI...

Make sure you get the insurance or if they(when they damage your stuff) will only pay you so much per lb. Most home owners and renters insurance will cover the move just dbl check with them.

I had my couches and mattress' soaked from water, many boxes were lost, and or not delivered. I will never move anything I can not fit in my car or move myself. Movers are not worth the money or the frustration.

The main problem is that cheap isn't good and good isn't cheap. Period.

Get everything in writing. Period. Charges, surcharges, shcedule change policy, damage reporting procedures/policy and probably a few things I'm forgetting.

Check with the Better Business Bureau and places like Angieslist to find out who is good and who isn't.

The movers have you in a tight spot if they start pulling crap. They have your stuff hostage, basically, and can legally keep it and charge you storage if you don't jump through their hoops.

One option is the pack and load yourself deal. Pods is one, the LTL carrier ABF is another. They drop off a container or trailer, you load it up. They then drive it to the new place and you unload it.
