why, after all this time, is Windows so fucking lame?

Recommended Posts

I have cable modem, and 2 Ghz of RAM. and yet, I continually get the usual Windows Spinning Disc, slowdowns, Trojans, etc. etc.

Is it time to give Windows the boot, & get a MAC??

Icontinually remember tho, when I had a Mac in the late 80s & 90s, & all the software was on a tiny shelf next to the broom closet, so I reverted to a PC.

But should I change back now?

The cable modem has nothing to do with your 'spinning disk'. I'd be willing to bet you're using Vista or maybe W7.

Trojans and such are more of a hazard to Win users because of the large number of targets.

Get a Mac, so you can use parallels to run your Windows software in an emulator? THAT makes sense.

If you're not a gamer, go with Mac or Linux. If you ARE a gamer, stick with XP and use Wubi to make a linux virtual machine within Windows and do your web browsing from that.

Or dual-boot Win and Linux and only use Windows for your games.

There is definitely a lot of Mac software available these days, and I like the Unix based OS X much more than the older versions of the Mac operating system. Unless there is something specific that you need Windows for, consider a Mac or Linux.

ever seen the PC vs. Mac videos ? Behind the sarcasm and humor lies the hard reality.

Except for the latest commercial where they go back to the 90's and before. Macs sucked back then. They sucked badly. I'm willing to bet that a majority of Mac users here never used one back in 1996 at any length (besides maybe being the right age to have used a IIe in school to play the Oregon Trail).

Remember how hard it was to drop a Mac onto a Novell network? Remember how bad the software was that was written for a Mac? That was back when you could drop to a native DOS prompt and make a PC do exactly what you wanted it to do easily, though.

Its only in the last few years that a Mac could do anything worth while. Actually, it was OSx. Before that, they really sucked, badly. If the NeXT project hadn't done well with the Mach kernel and some NetBSD objects, matured a bit and been bought back by Apple, then they would have been screwed. Then again, NeXT wouldn't have worked with out Ross Perot dumping money on them either...

I laugh at the arrogance of the modern Mac user who thinks their shit doesn't stick. It stinks and it used to stink badly, now it still stinks but it costs a lot more money to stink.:D

I wondered the same thing. Now I have a Mac :)

I love the new windows 7 commercials that showcase the "convenient" new things about windows 7...things that Mac has had for years. Windows has "snap". Mac has "Spaces" and the "Apple Tab" combo...doesn't get much better than that.:D

You need to get:

1. Windows 7
2. Windows Live OneCare
3. Upgrade to at least 3 gig of ram

Then it won't be as bad.

Although, I agree, for most people, a Mac is going to do you better. The exception is if you use PCs for work - you will eventually want to work from home, so get a PC. But I refuse to buy anything except Sony at this point.

better advertising

Apple- $188 a share

Microsoft $27 a share

next!
:D

That can be deceiving though. Sometimes companies do stock splits which cuts the price, but gives you double the number of shares or however they do it. I have seen 2 for 1 splits, 3 for 1 splits and 3 for 2 splits in the past among my stocks.

I don't know Microsoft's stock history but damn, I sure wish I'd bought shares when they went public. [:/]

Given the numbers of iPhones and iPods they sell, this is not a fair comparison of their operating systems now is it?
:S
There are still very valid reasons Windows is on just over 90% of systems.

And comparing the number of computers using the operating systems is not fair either. Leopard is pretty much exclusive to apple systems, whereas windows is the whore(used figuratively :P) of the computer world.

If you really wanted to compare the systems, for say reliability, I would be willing to bet the Mac would win hands down.

If you wanted to compare their gaming capabilities, Id give it to windows.

if you wanted to compare their versatility, Id call it a tie. Nowadays, almost every program that matters, is programmed for windows AND leopard, including windows office, photoshop, itunes, all internet explorers, many games, tons of video and music editing software, etc...

Basically what I am saying is, if you compare the important characteristics of a computer, you will start to see windows and leopard even out, and maybe even see leopard pull ahead. You throw in things like hardcore computer gaming, network manipulations etc...then the target audience slims, and of course, windows pulls ahead.

I have had a Mac for 3 years, and cannot think of one thing I was not able to use my computer for, when I wanted, with little to no effort. The fact is, if you consider reliability an important aspect of a computer, then Mac is your best choice hands down.

Like the Macbook G4? Apple has it's share of 'worms', so to speak. They're all using the same hardware these days - the difference is in two major categories:

1. Users - windows users have more ability to screw with the system and fuck it up. This isn't a problem with Apple, because you aren't going to be doing anything Jobs doesn't want you to do.

2. Hackers - higher installed base of 'targets' where windows is concerned. Couple that with stupid users that click any link they see in an email or on a webpage and that aren't running any sort of antivirus and you see a lot more windows machines with 'reliability problems'.

I disagree, there are plenty of high end CAD and simulation packages that only run on Windows. Not saying that I like it or am happy with the situation as I would happily switch to Linux.

Over the last ten years Apple's stock performance has been outstanding. Microsoft has been treading water for the most part.

Had you bought either when they went public you'd be very happy. Happier with Microsoft but in the last ten years...since Steve Jobs came back and Bill Gates handed MS to Fester (Steve Ballmer) Microsoft's shares have been doing nothing and Apple has been on a tear. Here's a chart for the last five years from Yahoo Finance. If you can find a place to do a ten year comparison I think the difference is greater.

The last five years with MS you have a negative return and with Apple you have a 600% return...that's in five years!!

One of the greatest regrets I have in life was not buying Apple just after the first iPods came out. They were trading for about $12 a share with $10 a share in cash. Yesterday they closed at $188 or something and they now have about $32 a share in cash. I fucking thought about it over and over again but couldn't do it after having made a lot of money and then losing it in the dot com meltdown.

It's not all bad news though..I did buy @ $139 a while ago so I'm up $50/share in about 2 years - 30 some percent.

Apple is a very well run company.

If I may answer with a question: Why are millions of people still willing to bitch "helplessly" about Windows when they can buy Macs instead?

Because Apple offer few computers in the sub-$1000 market. Entry level machines are not a market in which they choose to compete, despite the popularity of inexpensive machines.

Last I heard, Apple have about 90% market share in the >$1000 computer market. They have plenty of competition in that market, yet they have been dominating it.

Or use Wine. It is surprisingly good - so far almost every Windows app I run there works without major glitches (and I've been using Linux since 1999)

I just acquired a Fujitsu LifeBook T5010. The build quality on this thing is amazing. Windows 7 is running very very well, and since it's also a tablet, MS OneNote is nothing short of a Godsend. I literally looked at multiple machines, including Apple. This Fujitsu is all business and makes no apologies about it.

I had long thought that I had had enough of Windows forever. XP was dragging me down, Vista had the "stigma" about it. As "cool" as Macs are, I simply realized that I didn't want to switch.

I have no regrets about my decision. I think Microsoft got it dead on with Win 7. The hardware is running Office Professional with no issues either.

So, your windows aren't so lame as much as they're old...:D

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
