QuoteQuoteQuoteThe first time she jumped, the actress started near the cockpit, ran the length of the plane and hurtled straight out the back door.
I've seen that alot on first jumps...haven't you guys?![]()
that description just screams!!! tandem....
out of a tailgate..
and if there was video then she could have "re-experienced' that one dive , over and over again,,, to the point where she truly DOES believe that "she's done it a number of times"...
NOW lets Get JAY Leno out to a DZ to make a few,,,, and THAT would be a positive thing for the sport....

QuoteApparently I'm REALLY outta touch.
My first guess is she's a celebrity...which might explain that...but ... who the fuck is Hillary Swank.
Not even worth a google since I don't even thin I've heard the name before.
Which would remind me ... why the hell would I care about a celebrity that has less than zero impact on my life in any possible manner.......??????
Never will I understand that either.
she won an Oscar for the her first film, Boys Dont Cry.

QuoteI just can't see an instructor letting a first jump AFF student run down the aisle and superman it out the door.
It sounded like she has two skydives, and I was guessing they were both tandems. Which makes the story about running down the length of the plane much more entertaining

You've seen TIs run down the length of a plane with a 150-pound student hanging on the front of them, and a 50-pound rig on their back?? Man, the TIs at my DZ must just be lazy-fuckers
QuoteShe wasn't really a celeb when she did her jumps. In that interview she said she did the first one when she was underage, and she got married at about 21, so she hadn't made Boys Don't Cry yet.

Oh but she was in Karate Kid 3 by that point and from what I understand it was during or after that movie that she would probably been jumping so she was not even famous enough to be remembered. It was Karate Kid 3 who remembers that movie.

I think she is an incredible talent with a big soul. One tandem or 1000 skydive? Who cares?
I'd call it a slow trott,,just creates the illusion of running,,hey you do what ever it takes to get the girl,,just like in the movies...

alot of people still don't like the idea of flying let alone falling from the aircraft. kudos to her for doing it, she's got my respect, celebrity or not.

Quotethe first year the 182 was built they used 180 main gear... The year was 1956 and I owned one for many years ... killler
The 1956 C 182 had taller landing gear than subsequent models. It was found to be a little less stable during ground handling as it sat up higher than necessary. The 182 has never used 180 gear. The 182 fuselage remained the same from 1956-59 and had the 180 landing gear structure as well as the 182 gear structure. It allowed for manufacturing simplicity as it went down the assembly line. 180 just plug in that gear, 182 add a nose leg and 182 mains.
To answer the other posts again... early 182 did indeed have "tall" gear and they were easier to get out of with friends as the wing was higher up relative to the step.

QuoteRemember that 60 min episode with the Bird Men....Yeah I got a lot of that shit!
One of my favorite was
Yup. 1,266 jumps in my log. First 60 or so were civilian, then about 30 with the military, and the rest civilian. I used to fly the jump plane (deHavilland Beaver) in exchange for lifts, once made 17 jumps in one day. some of the military jumps were HALO and HAHO, too, jumping from up to 27,000 feet and popping as low as 1800 feet. I had close over 800 jumps before my first BASE. I really like HAHO on a clear day. LZ can be 20 miles or more from the DP. Indescribably beautiful.
First and only Building was the Sears Tower in Chicago. First and only Antenna was next, WCIX TV tower in Homestead. First Span was New River Gorge in West Virginia. I've also jumped Royal Gorge in Colorado. First Earth was Angel Falls in Venezuela. Also Beachy Head in England, Preikestolen and Trollveggen in Norway, Kalaupapa in Hawaii, Half Dome in Yosemite, Mount Thor and Mount Asgard on Baffin Island in Canada, and a few more I can't recall right now. I've jumped cliffs around Forio, Italy, Palofrugal, Spain, and Cost Rica. I've also jumped off a few boom cranes and a rail crane in a shipyard. I had a death wish at the time. Never so much as a bruise or scratch. My last jump of any kind was in 1979. Doubtful that I'll ever make another jump.
oh it gets better!
I made my first jump in 1969. My family has always owned airplanes-been hanging around airports as long as I can remember. I exchanged piloting services for lifts, even owned my own jump plane for a while, one of the old C182s with the long landing gear so 4-aways were easier. Nothing unusual to jump 10 times or more in a day. 40 jumps a week was nothing unusual in my between-marriages days. Jump numbers add up fast when hanging out at the LZ is profitable.
There is enough real-world stuff in his tidbits to give me the feeling that he knew a lot more than the average man-on-the-street. Unless you are adding the BASE locations from your own head he had quite an in-depth knowledge of the early BASE sites. Having quit by 1979 kinda makes that seem implausible but how else would he know so well about them. Even his DZ comments have a ring of truth. 10 jumps in a day and 40 in a week is not at all unbelievable. A 1956 182 is indeed easier to exit with it's taller gear but pilots didn't like it. He would have been a good one to brain-pick a little harder. Either he would have turned out to be a brilliant bullshitter or somebody I would love to meet, maybe both!

Quoteanother one worth watching
I think she is an incredible talent with a big soul. One tandem or 1000 skydive? Who cares?
Exactly. I don't really talk much about actors or care much either way, but Hillary Swank is the real deal in terms of acting. She is not a Hollywood princess, either. Her and her mother moved to L.A. from Washington, and she even lived out of her car at one point. She is not one who is acting just to be a celebrity. She is authentic.
Initially, Hilary was propelled into fame due to her talent as an actress and to the fact that she received an Oscar at such a young age early in her career as an actress. Also, she generally stays out of the lime light and doesn't seem to go out clubbing or to places "to be seen". However, she is not seen doing stupid human tricks among the young Hollywood scene. That said, she does promote her work, which includes interviews on shows, such as Leno's. It's imperative, that a lead actress or actor do that as part of her contract.
I think it's unfair that there is such speculation or doubt about some actors' private lives or interests, in general. They're only human. If an actor/actress talks about or is excited by jumping, that is very, very cool and good PR for our sport. Maybe Hilary did jump a few times many years ago. If so, good for her. Either way, I still respect her acting, which has nothing to do with skydiving.

Hi Mama
I heard all the hype about the movie, finally saw it on HBO or somewhere. FWIW I was glad that I got to see it even if I cried at the end

IMO Hillary Swank is a kick ass actress and a skydiver.
