labrys 0 #3 October 26, 2009 Quote how bad is it if you eat peanut butter after the best if used date, like lets say 2.5months? Depends a lot on how it's been stored, eh? labrys 0 #5 October 26, 2009 I've met people who keep everything they've opened in the fridge.... I'm not that picky. If it can't move on it's own, I'm not afraid to eat it.Owned by Remi #?

1969912 0 #7 October 26, 2009 I'd eat it. This is pretty interesting: "The Food & Drug Administration, which regulates packaged foods and drugs, only requires a use-by, or expiration, date on infant formula." http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/oct2006/db20061002_959305.htm "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
riddler 0 #8 October 26, 2009 I don't think the date on peanut butter is an expiration date. I think its a "it doesn't even start to get tasty until this date" date.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
aresye 0 #9 October 26, 2009 If you eat natural peanut butter, like Smuckers, then it does need to be refrigerated after opening. I grew up on it, so I always keep my PB in the fridge.Skydiving: You either learn from other's mistakes, or they'll learn from yours.
d_squared431 0 #10 October 26, 2009 Make a few peanut butter cookies and take them to work. If the coworkers dont go home sick or call in sick the next day then you are safe to finish the jar...You should be fine but make sure it was not on the recall list from 6 months back. xtravrtsoul 0 #12 October 26, 2009 PB has an expiration date? Is it a sell by date that is on the jar? My PB last forever and I eat it. That could explain a lot about me. You create life, life does not create you.
normiss 800 #13 October 26, 2009 I consider a lot of these as "throw this out and buy more of our product" dates. Except for milk products...but those are usually considerate enough to "TELL" me when they're bad.

Snowwhite 0 #17 October 26, 2009 I thought 3 years was a safe bet, until Patrick came to town a few years back and ate some of my 3 year past expiration PB and said it tasted like Shite. However, I don't think he actually GOT sick, he just said he thought he might. Doesn't count.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com

metalslug 36 #19 October 27, 2009 Peanut butter typically does not support bacteria and/or mold growth because of its low moisture content (less than 1%) and high oil content. However, the oils can become rancid over time. When peanut butter become rancid, it develops an odd, oily flavor and odor. There are several factors that contribute to the time it takes for peanut butter to become rancid (i.e temperature, additives, oxygen availability). Basically, if it still tastes and smells okay, its probably still safe to consume, but most peanut butters start to turn rancid after 9 to 12 months under normal conditions. Refrigeration does help in slowing the rate of rancidity.
