jimmytavino 16 #1 October 23, 2009 i saw today, where Soupy Sales has passed away... His smile and spontaneous comedy always brought me delight,, when i was kid, parked in front of the old motorola Black & White TV... His Pie in the Face routine, was perhaps the precursor to skydivng's "pieing of jumpers" whenever they reached any certain milestone... The news reported that Soupy took tens of thousands of pies to the face,,, on his Childrens Tv Show.... sometimes 3 or 4 at a time... He sang silly songs.. "Ba-Ka-La-Fa-Ka", and "Hey !! Do the Mouse",,, and had a few puppet "co-stars" like White Fang and Black Tooth, who were nothing more than a furry-gloved hand, with claws,,,,which appeared before the camera, while Soupy was doing one skit or another... He had another puppet pal, named Pookie who was also a regular....... A real nice guy and a Televison pioneer, back in the days of One camera, LIVE TV, shot on site in a studio, somewhere... SO????... who here Remembers??? Soupy Sales?? who does Not?? i DO and will continue to remember him. I'm singing the Mouse song, now, as i type this,, and that damn thing will probably be stuck in my head now,,, all day..!! R I P Soup............... jaytee

captain1976 0 #5 October 23, 2009 Can never forget the fights my brother and I would have over the TV. You see, the Soupy Sales show directly conflicted with the TV series RIPCORD starring Ken Curtis also know as "Festus" on Gunsmoke. Curtis also is said to have made a couple of parachute jumps. I wanted to watch the "parachuters", he wanted to see Soupey. I still liked Soupy and ofter look at him on youtube. You live more in the few minutes of skydiving than many people live in their lifetime

DavidB 0 #8 October 23, 2009 Yep, loved Soupy, the pies, the silliness, the sock puppets, & the insanity. I think my favorite Soupy Sales story is the time the crew got a stripper for him. He answered a knock at the door, the camera (on the air) never saw the stripper, but Soupy did, & his reaction is just so damn funny (& yes I've seen footage of the stripper shot from back stage that confirms it really happened). A quick Google would likely turn it up as it's a classic. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
LisaH 0 #9 October 23, 2009 I loved his telling kids to reach into their parents wallets/purses and mail him all of the pictures of presidents. Be yourself! MooOOooOoo
grimmie 186 #10 October 23, 2009 He did a bit on one of the "Dean Martin" roast shows that floored everyone into tears of laughter. He would have been a great skydiver with all of the pie throwing for sure.

jimmytavino 16 #12 October 23, 2009 well actually .. it's " damn, you're old..." which she isn't.... she simply was exposed to Funny stuff when she was a small child... Philo Kvetch...a far cry from Magnum P I ... but philo paved the way.... .... also good points about when the off camera stage hands would screw with Soupy,,, and try to throw him off,, and crack him up!!!! I bet that was a fun place to work.... thanks for the links JT
tbrown 26 #13 October 24, 2009 I can't really say that I remember Soupy. I know I heard his name a lot and a bit of a song called "Poff - a - loff-a-ka", or something like that. But that's about it. The thing is, with each passing of a star of the 20th century, I'm starting to get what it feels like to see a whole era slipping away, one that the younger generation has no clue about at all. It's spooky. Must be how OUR parents stated to feel 20-30 years ago.... Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
lekstrom10k 0 #14 October 26, 2009 Soupy was on Detroit TV WXYZ channel 7 for years You could be in his night time show at the Macabees building or later Broadcast house in Southfield. He did outrageous stuff like Ernie Kovacks. I got to shake hands with him about 1953when I was 11 I was to old for 12 O,clock Comics but to young to pick up all the double meanings of his night show. It sometimes got like "Laugh-in " a day or so later it sunk in. I too remember the stripper incident. He had a bit called the River Boat Gambler aboard the S.S. Kielbasa. Some of his guests were from the original Lone Ranger Sgt Preston of the Yukon and The Shadow from the 1940,s
