NickDG 23 #1 October 15, 2009 Six year old boy in flight with homemade balloon. They are saying "hot air" but it looks more like Helium. Unbelievable! NickD

NickDG 23 #6 October 15, 2009 They are talking about the best course of action - there is no course of action I can think of . . . I'd imagine as the helium cools with nightfall it should come down. NickD

yoink 321 #11 October 15, 2009 Not for the kid if something goes wrong. They need to get some kind of tether to it. Maybe from the end of a rappel?
warpedskydiver 0 #12 October 15, 2009 A helicopter and a shotgun is what is needed. Use beanbag round to pop holes in it. Or get a modified C130 to snag it. Or shoot a grappling line through the lines, then deflate the balloon and lower it via helicopter. Geez people don't think very quickly
DJL 235 #13 October 15, 2009 Holy shit. Weather today is about 67 degrees in Fort Collins, so if he's at 8-10k then the temps are in the 30's."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

LongWayToFall 0 #17 October 15, 2009 They just said the boy may have fallen out right after take off, according to a sibling who watched the whole thing. So at this point they do not know if he is inside. Wouldn't you think that without 50lbs, the balloon would not stop until it got to 30-50k feet? I think it is at 7-10k right now. Regardless, scary

jimmytavino 16 #22 October 15, 2009 if the kid is still inside it is anything BUT funny..... TV shot of the event must be taken from a moving aircraft,,, using zoom lens video.. cause it makes it appear that the balloon is moving realllll fast... when the winds are being reported as "light".. Tough situation, maybe they can snag it with a helicopter and tether... maybe a Person, at the end of the tether with some type of grappling device.. which can be secured to the balloon, then compromise the envelope by knife.. to bleed off the helium... allowing the deflating balloon to be "held" by the tether.... lower the whole mess , carefully to the ground.... would rather see some sorta controlled descent,,,, instead of just letting it , "come to the ground" on it's own...gravity can be nasty..... if you can't control it... yikes..... jt
NickDG 23 #23 October 15, 2009 Nobody is laughing . . . A helicopter isn't going to get anywhere near it because of the rotor wash. He's a 500-feet now. Come on Falcon, pull it out, Bro! NickD
