Anyone with an Infinity have hip rings and/or stainless hardware?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be ordering my first rig soon, and I intend to order an Infinity, due to the 50% off voucher I have. I'm trying to decide if I should get hip rings, stainless hardware, or neither. I can't really afford both.

Any suggestions on why/why not to get either of these options?

I can't speak for Infinity rigs, but speaking generally I'd go with the hip rings. They make your harness that bit more comfortable by reducing the force needed to move your hips around. Stainless makes your rig look pretty. Your call :P.

I've no idea what the absence of either will do for resale values.

I'm not responding specifically to Amazon.

I'm curious as to how many people have the means to make a fair comparison between hip rings and no hip rings. The high time jumpers I've talked to specifically about this subject who have hundreds or more jumps on rigs equal in all other respects, don't place much importance on hip rings outside of freestyle. However, this subject doesn't often come up, so I would be interested in hearing input from anyone with lots of jumps with and without on the same brand custom harness.

A custom harness is going to be pretty comfortable with or without hip rings.

On the other hand, This post leads me to beleive that stainless hardware might be more than just a cosmetic option. It might have greater longevity than standard hardware.

If you will be doing a lot of freestyle, go I recommend the hip rings. For anything else, the stainless is probably the better option.

Regardless of which option you choose, you will love your Infinity. Velocity Sorts Equipment builds an outstanding container.

hip rings definately.. i opted for stainless too..

my first mirage fit very well for being bought used, but didnt have hip rings, the difference in ease of motion with hip rings is well worth it imo.

stainless not only looks nice, but will help the resale value and attract the hotties... (yea thats the ticket! chicks dig shiney things.. oh wait thats me...oh look glitter..)

My experience is that rigs without hip rings don't flex nearly as well in the plane or on the ground. That's my big point of preference for hip rings. While I admit I haven't tried a custom-fitted-to-me rig without hip rings, I assume it still won't be as free-moving in the plane or on the ground as one with hip rings.

I've got an older Infinity (DOM 6-97) with hip rings. I'd have to say it's a huge improvement in comfort on those 30 minute Cessna trips to altitude. If you're only going to be jumping from turbines and sitting on bench seats, you might not appreciate it as much. I never regretted the extra money I paid for that option.

All the people talking about Stainless being only bling bling obviously don't live in super-humid climates.

The cadium/nickel plating on my rig became highly corroded after 1.5years of use. It was due to the extreme temps and extreme humidity in this part of Texas. Even the manufacturing reps in Florida said that the climate is more humid with more extremes then even in Florida and can cause problems to hardware that isn't stainless.

If I hadn't have learned that from a couple of reps from a couple of different manufactures, I wouldn't believe it to be an issue and would have assumed I had gotten a "bad batch" of hardware.

Rusting hardware destroys harnesses. Non-articulated harness can still be comfy, just maybe not quite as comfy as an articulated harness.

So at the end of the day, Grue is going to have to make up his own mind...hell maybe Kelly will take pity on him and his situation and toss in stainless at the manufacture's cost or something. You never know with that company, they're all about the customer service (to a point, obviously).

While I haven't jumped the same brand custom harness with and without hip rings, I have jumped a number of standard harnesses (SST Racer, Racer Elite, Vector I and II, pre-1996 Talon, Javelin) and a few harnesses with hip rings (Infinity, Vector 3, Reflex).

It's not comfort or flexibility in freefall that I notice most. It's comfort walking to the plane, waiting for the plane, sitting in the plane, under canopy, and walking back to the packing area that sold me.

I'll never own another standard harness.

I've doen it twice. The Hip rings are the far better option.

Chris.... I can speak specifically to the Hip rings vs No hip rings.. I have jumped both.. and both on Infinity containers. The movement factor in the articulated harness is far more comfy to me. I do a variety of jumping.. and I have to say that the hip rings are definitely the way to go.. I tighten down my leg straps very tight.. and I need no bungie cord for freeflying.. they just do not move at all.
I speed dive.. and they help in that I can stretch out my body straight when I am playing lawn dart... and I can arch very hard with no issues when I am belly flying. Its important for me to have my leg straps stay put... since I have my chest strap down low under by breasts. I also like to do high hop and pops and the articulated harness is far more comfy than the non articulated harness when I was hanging under a canopy for 15 minutes.
I have had 3 Infinity articulated harnesses built for me.. and I have jumped 4 others with two of them being non articulated...
I value my comfort.

What I would really like to know is how I can get me one of the 50% off vouchers?

The harness MLW dimension is critical, and you might need to spend a few hundred extra dollars to get it right. If your shoulders become "hunched" when you tighten your leg straps then your MLW is too short. You don't need hip rings to enhance articulation of your hips and legs.
