Credit Check When Applying For Job

Recommended Posts

Is it normal for companies to ask for a credit check and a background check when applying for a new job? I mean ... I can understand if it was the last step before getting the job... but everywhere I seem to apply they ask for a credit check. Also ...is it a good idea to put skydiving in your list of hobbies on your resume? What do you think?

depends on the job, for some it is mandatory, seems like it is happening more often

I wouldn't put anything on paper that would raise a question, that might be all it takes to not get the job

perception is everything

The credit check is to kinda see how stable you are..

For example a Person with fucked up credit might be more of a risk handling money..or might do some stupid shit not in the best interest of the company for some cash on the side...

Don't take it personal bro, they're just trying to weed out some fukstiks

You're there for a job, people that don't jump really don't give a flying fuck that you skydive....very possible that other jumpers might feel this way too. During an interview I don't see the skydiving thing helping any....unless you're applying at a DZ. not likely though, be cause they hire just about anybody..LOL

+1 Also people that have bad credit are typically more stressed and dealing with being broke all the time. The more stressed you are the less you get done at work. or the more debt colectors you have calling your job to try and get money;). I personally am on the other side of the fence. I had great credit a year or so ago, but i pay cash for everything and dont have any CC so my credit scores get worse every year. But typically im not the standard. Most people with bad credit have bad credit cause they dont pay for the shit they have;)

Or they have family members who ruin their credit, have injuries/health issues that cause them to be out of work for a longer than normal amount which makes them lose their jobs. Not just dead beats have bad credit.

The credit check is done after you are hired the back ground check is done prior to hire. At least that is my understanding.

I had to get several VERY in depth background and credit checks to get where I am. I know of atleast a few people on here in the same boat.

Is it a position in the govt, a big IT type company or american idol?

The reason I was asking is because it appears all companies here in Canada seem to be asking for alot of personal information. From Radio Shack to CN ...they all want to check your credit before they even consider hiring you and want you to allow them to do a background check on you. Isn't having a credit check and background check some sort of discrimination? I mean ...ok ...I can understand if a potential employer would tell me...ok ...you seem like a decent guy ...all we need now in order to hire you is a credit check . But no ...now the first thing when you apply ...they give you a form asking you to allow some company to do a background check and credit check. It doesn't seem right. Just my 2 cents.

You have to appreciate the sick irony. A person might have a poor credit score because he's been unemployed for a time and thus had trouble paying his bills. When he tries to get a job so he can earn more income to be able to pay his bills, he's rejected because he has a poor credit score. Without a steady job, his credit score keeps getting worse, and so does his employability. After a while he gets to wondering whether he sold his soul to the Devil in a previous life.

Actually I think having a bad credit makes someone more employable. Think about ... A guy who is up to his neck in debt will probably work harder, ask for a smaller salary, and would fear the idea of getting fired. Sounds like a better employee than someone who doesn't owe money to nobody and who would not stand for the abuse of some employers.

Bad credit risks often make bad security risks and bad insurance risks. My last security clearance review included, among other things, a credit check. Although there are exceptional circumstances for many people, most bad credit scores are the result of bad judgment, at least for the people I know. Who would you want working for your company?

Edited to say that I think it's wrong that they can ask for your credit rating. It's a job, not a loan application. What's next, your medical records? Who wants to hire a sick person, eh?:S

If it weren't for HIPAA, that would be next. In fact, I won't be surprised if some employers start requiring a signed HIPAA waiver as part of the job application process. Employers want to know absolutely as much personal stuff about their employees as they possibly can get away with, even if it's not really relevant to job performance. Because - it can always be rationalized as "we want to know what kind of person we're hiring." Great. So how about DNA testing - after all, a person with a genetic propensity to get a certain disease is a bad hiring risk, right?

Where does it stop?

It stops when you bring your resume to the company down the street that hires any swinging dick scumbag crackhead piece of shit and their sister that might get disgruntled and start a gunfight at your business...

In my line of work mistakes/poor performance means somebody father, brother, husband..etc is not gonna make it home for dinner...so that being said...we don't hire just anybody...you will get asked all kinds of personal shit...were up close and personal type of motherfuckers that's how we operate, the doctor is gonna stick his finger up your ass even...if you got shadows in your lung x-rays from smoking crack...or if you feel fucking violated....burger king is always hiring

Life just isn't fucking fair....but neither is getting wasted at work because some fucking stupid fuck is worried about a backround or credit check or medical exam....

Wow... I really did not think about any of this and I am in the process of going through interview to get a new job as a forecaster at an ARTCC. So, it's NOAA/NWS which is government and they'll do a credit check. I have some bad things on my credit report from 5 or so years ago when I was a stupid freshmen in college and had no concept of what would happen when you didn't pay your credit card. Everything since then is marked as on time, so hopefully all of that won't mess this up for me because this job is really right up my alley. [:/]
Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

I used to work in recruitment and it's my experience that when you are honest in a job interview, you can explain away most of the concerns an employer might have about you.

Most companies will ask if it's ok with you to carry out a credit check, but few will go to the trouble of actually carrying them out until they are genuinely considering hiring you. Just think of it this way.. Why get a reference and do credit checks on the first thousand applicants? Imagine the logistics of doing this!

If you've made it though the 1st or 2nd or indeed 3rd round of interviews and they then carry out a credit check, by this point, you should already have a lot going for you.. Your score may not be ideal, but unless you are applying for some kind of role where you are managing client funds, etc., a bad credit score usually won't be held against you provided you're honest about why it's bad.

Bear in mind that most people have low scores - it's only a small minority of people who have a good score.. So if yours isn't great - consider yourself to fall within the norm..

Please don't put "Hobbies" on your resume - especially skydiving, unless it is an adventure company.
List "Accomplishments" or "Certifications."

And, whatever you do, please do NOT put a degree on your resume if you don't have one.
It's 2009 and a month ago, some twit I'm interviewing puts a degree on his resume which took about 3 seconds to find out "NOT" during the background check.
Yes, I gave him the opportunity to challenge.
He did not accept.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

My previous job was for a credit card processing company.
They need to know if you have $40K on a credit card
that you might be tempted to remove.

Jobs with large banks. Once again, they don't
want you setting up fake accounts, credit cards, etc.

So, the credit check is a "probability of future theft" check.

I also get a free FBI criminal records check (fingerprints).

The interest in drug testing is starting to wane (probably
because it is relatively valueless).

It's extremely rare for someone to have NO credit.. I mean, when you're younger, yes.. But if you've ever owned a credit card, had a small loan, bought a house, got a store card, registered to vote, opened up a bank account etc., you are in the system. You will always start with a low credit score by default and you have to work your way up to a good score.

So, when you think you have no score, chances are you in fact have a low one. It's unfortunate that people who deal almost exclusively with cash have poor credit ratings.. But from a lending point of view it makes sense - there is simply no *proof* that you are able to manage your money.

If you have the discipline to pay for things only in cash, then pay with a credit card that gives you points or rebates and pay in full each month.

You get a great credit, points or rebates, and you are in the same financial position, only better.

Houston Center, right? I hope you get the job. I wish you'd come work at Seattle Center so I'd have another jumper to talk to on break.:D

I wish!! Seattle is gorgeous, and it would be nice to have another jumper to talk to at work! B|

Many people who pay with cash as they go do so because they realize that they lack the self discipline necessary to use a credit card responsibly. If they have access to the card, they'll use it until it's maxed out.
