Ketia0 0 #1 September 25, 2009 So i have pictures of me skydiving on my desk for others to see. That way i can advertise skydiving to the contractors that are coming to work on the unit, and tell them how fortunate they are to only be 1 hour away from one of the best dropzones in the world.. ( ok, im biased towards SDSL.. I tell everyone to go there. ) So this one contractor comes in, and sees the picture. Its starts off as the normal conversation, where he asks if its scary, and then says how he always wanted to do it. By this point they think skydivng is expensive ( it IS!!!).. but i tell them how cheap it is to do the first tandem. ( I have SDSL prices memorized!! Its $20 off if you call in 24 advance for a tandem. 189 on weeekends, 169 on weekdays)... also there are group rates.. anywho. this the part that REALLY ticked me off. He got the point and we were talking about safety, and asked if we pack our own chutes. And i told him yes. Majority of skydivers do.. here is how the conversation went.. " Yes we pack our own mains. Reserves are special so only can be packed by riggers" " Man.. i dont think i would pack my own. Who would you sue if something went wrong" " huh???" " If they parachute didnt open, then you would have no one to blame but yourself.. then you couldnt sue someone.. i dont want that kind of responsibility." "are you serious..." I turned around and walked away. This is absolutely nuts!!! am i just too sensative or does this chap yalls hide too?"In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds. Ketia0 0 #3 September 25, 2009 Oh, i did forget one thing. he said he would never skydive now that he knows he has to take responisibility for it. Good!!! "In this game you can't predict the future. Ketia0 0 #7 September 25, 2009 thats the first time that has happened. The contractors who come to my desk i dont know. 99.9% people are open to hear about it. and no lie, some people even say they want to go, but always thought it was more than 200. ive heard people say it was in the 500 range!! jumpwally 0 #8 September 25, 2009 Lesson 1 - Its a waste of time telling non-skydivers anything. If he always wanted to do it, he would have gone out and did it like you did. Lesson 2 - Don't do business with people like that. listen to what he said and watch now on how he handles things with an attitude like that, just watch and see..... smile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083

Ketia0 0 #10 September 25, 2009 Like i said, these are not people i work with or for. Looong story short, i am a Process Operator for BP Texas City site ( you may have heard of us from our March 23 explosion).. anywho, when people are coming on to my unit, they have to have a "face-to-face" with me. we discuss what work they want to do and all that. so i see a big variety of people all week. and i wouldnt say its a total waste of time. ive got a buddy that is now losing weight because of how awesome i told him skydving was! ( he is over 280#)"In this game you can't predict the future. You just have to play the odds. "-JohnMitchell
Icon134 0 #11 September 25, 2009 You should have pointed out that he wouldn't likely be able to sue anyone anyhow due to the waiver he has to sign... besides... he can't blame anyone else for the openings... even if you pay a packer... you aren't paying them for the openings just the pack jobs... Ketia0 0 #13 September 25, 2009 lol.. Yes, we had a horrible accident. But we learned from it. New equipment and updated computers so Process Operators better know what is going on in thier unit, and can react when something goes wrong. I love my job... love skydivng more.. but still.. love my job! ( I get to see Jet-A before its made, after its made, and when its burned! "In this game you can't predict the future.
