Who is smarter in your relationship?

Recommended Posts

Two of my friends just started dating, and it's an interesting contrast in character between the two. He's more street-smart, very logical/methodical, can make/fix/repair almost anything, loves more physical activities such as hiking, various indoor/outdoor sports, etc. She is more book-smart, has an IQ bordering on 200 (yes she tested it more than a number of times), but somewhat clueless in daily life situations, doesn't play any sports, and her only physical activity is walking daily for a few miles. She loves reading, and reads anything and everything about topics spanning many categories and genres. He rarely picks up a book, save for an occasional fiction book or magazine related to cars/music. Yet, they make a perfect couple and are disgustingly into each other. :P I've never seen a couple where is each partner is almost a complete opposite of each other...

So here's my question. In your relationship...is one of you more book-smart, and one more street-smart? Does that difference in 'smarts' contribute to various partners having different interests, hobbies, and/or passions in daily life & careers? How do you deal with certain 'smarts' differences between two partners, and does it affect you at all?

My girlfriend is definitely a street-smart. She can survive street any day without money. Any yet, she is struggling to get good grades in school. She absolutely avoid risks at all cost and would get sick over things that you wouldn't think of. On the other hand, I am more of book-smart and adventurous person. I have a masters' degree. I am a recreational pilot; ride motorcycle; and plan to take up skydiving (currently saving up money for full training plus extra in case I fail at some levels). That's a general view of us, but you can see that we are completely opposite of each other.

To answer your questions, we both acknowledge the differences in term of "smarts" and we accept each other for who we are. We get benefits from each other. I helped her with school sometime ( Don't tell me how I do that,;) but I do get a very nice reward afterward :) ) She helped me with her street skills (Don't tell me how, but I could talk my way out for things without paying these ridiculous fees.:D) I won't lie to you about this. We do fight sometimes over stupid or tiny things. But, at the end of the day, we just can't get rid of each other. We have a very strong moral ground and we trust each other without a question. She is my best friend and I am her best friend as well.

I don't think that situation is too very uncommon.

My situation -
I'm more educated. You could probably describe that as "book smart," but it doesn't mean that I don't have the ability to apply that knowledge or have common sense.

He's more mechanically minded. I am often amazed by what he "sees" when he looks at a chunk of 4140 steel . . . not quite like Tony Starks - but only cuz he doesn't have the cool suit of armor. . . . yet.

I don't think either is "smarter," although neither of us have technically been tested.

My best answer is in relation to the guy I was with for 5-ish years..

We were pretty well matched. Both had similar street-vs-book smarts.. Although I performed slightly better academically, whereas he had slightly better people skills.

I don't think things work out if you don't have similar levels of intelligence - even if they are in different fields..

To which part? Being honest or having no people skills?

:P:ph34r:

Oi!!! I *do* have people skills - it just so happens that my ex has *better* social skills!

The two are often highly correlated.

nah....people with people skills just know when to stfu.

I would argue that, in practice, honesty is not as highly regarded in our society as it is in theory. Many of the values we claim to hold in high regard in our society are often looked down upon in practice.

Heller said it well:

[Major Major] was polite to his elders, who disliked him. Whatever his elders told him to do, he did. They told him to look before he leaped, and he always looked before he leaped. They told him never to put off until the next day what he could do the day before, and he never did. He was told to honor his father and his mother, and he honored his father and his mother. He was told that he should not kill, and he did not kill, until he got into the Army. Then he was told to kill, and he killed. He turned the other cheek on every occasion and always did unto others exactly as he would have had others do unto him. When he gave to charity, his left hand never knew what his right hand was doing. He never once took the name of the Lord his God in vain, committed adultery or coveted his neighbor's ass. In fact, he loved his neighbor and never even bore false witness against him. Major Major's elders disliked him because he was such a flagrant nonconformist.

That hasn't been my experience. I think this topic deserves its own thread.
