old beer...

Recommended Posts

my coworker found a bottle of Heineken that has been in the trunk of his car "for over half a year". i'm kinda new to this alcohol thing, (i'm edumakating myself) and i'm a little alcohol-inept. my question is, does beer expire, and would it be detrimental to my health to drink it? :S

who turns away free beer?? :D

Sounds a bit "aged"
Like it was said beer does go bad....I've had a bottle that was keep cold for over a year and was still good...but sitting in the trunk of a car in the heat and getting shook around would more then likely turn it as said "skunked"
But hey, open it and try it!!B|

Let us know how it is:D:D

I agree. New, cold Heineken tastes like shit. I wouldn't want to know what an old, flat and warm one would taste like.

But, I suppose for some alcohol is alcohol. Try it and let us know. ;)

well, i guess i'm not drinking it...as desperate as i am for alcohol right now :D

You're not desperate for a buzz until you drink bong water. Do it once and you'll never do it again. Come to think of it, Hiniken tasts a lot like bong water.

I use to work in a microbrewery, and had to pour many a keg and bottle of old beer down the drain which was a trough cut into the concrete floor-ever seen a river of beer flow into the sewer? it's very sad. All beer has a shelf life especially un pasteurized.....it has no shelf life at all if you are a skydiver. If it is in a growler from the local pub it should be consumed within a day or two. Anyway sometimes I saw retailers who display craft beers on un- refrigerated shelfs in the open exposed to light:S beer should always be stored in the dark in the cold for six months on average up to 12 if pasteurized-and away from the greedy hands of your thankless house mates who are always late with the fu@%ing rent, unless they have tantalizing flirtatious girlfriends.

Very true.

It probably won't do any physical harm, but it'll probably taste pretty bad. The fact that it's Heineken isn't helping either :P

The effect of aging on beer is dependent on the type of beer doing the aging. Stronger beers tend to improve with some age, but mass-produced light lagers, etc.. generally don't. People often cellar Thomas Hardy's Ale for several years before drinking them, but it's a 12% abv Old Ale.

The heat's gonna be the killer though. Here's an interesting article about it if you feel like doing some reading.

Err....I think Sierra Nevada has that distinction.

Young one ... "old" and "beer" should never be used in the same sentence.

It's like Martha Stewart saying you should freeze your leftover wine in icecube trays to use in sauces ....

WHAT leftover wine?!?

You'll learn, grasshopper ... you'll learn ... ;););)

Leftovers. What a strange concept.

>bottle conditioning?

Yep. Leaving active/dormant yeast in the beer is somewhat preservative and lets you age beer for a while - and some beers do get better with age. That's true whether it's just unfiltered or you do actual refermentation (adding sugar/yeast before bottling it.)

OTOH filtered beers don't last long in storage, especially warm storage. So drink up.

Oh, I don't know about that. We have some Black Butte 21, Angel's Share and Russian River Devotion aging in our closet. Another six months should be perfect.

I'm really not that classy; I just have a lot of friends who run/work at microbreweries. And there are days when it would be nice to trade the teetering stacks of bottle aged stuff in the closet with some plain ol' "drink anytime" beer.

Appreciate you trying to fit in with us low lifes ... :P:P:P
