Bigger Skydivers vs. Smaller Equipment

Recommended Posts

There's been several threads recently regarding larger skydivers (> 200 lbs) and Type 8 vs. Type 17 Mini Risers and large vs. small 3-rings. So my questions are:

Is there really that much drag advantage to having small risers & rings compared to the amount of [parasitic?] drag the larger skydiver creates?
Is it significant enough to sacrifice the additional tensile strength provided by the larger rings and risers?
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I think all the small stuff is a un needed super coolio hype.....................Jump gear with all the small super coolio hyped stuff and then do one with normal stuff,,and when you are drinkin' around the bonfire ask your self how much more fun it was or wasn't.......doesn't make sense to me. Just like the collapsible pilot chute,,for a tiny percieved gain you add in an ugly potential function,,and for what?

With small canopies, a collapsable PC makes a HUGE difference. Also, a collasped PC caught in an outer "A" doesn't really matter. If the PC was inflated, well it could mean a reserve ride.

I couldn't get the slider down over the larger risers. The smaller risers never failed me, and as Bill Booth pointed out, it is better if the risers do fail before the harness or jumper does.

people don't get mini rings and smaller risers to reduce drag, excepting a few swoopers.

most skydivers get them to look cooler or be in with the cool crowd.

Or maybe for smaller pack volume?

Or maybe for ease of riser use?

And yes to get the slider down with greater ease.

Smaller pack volume = less weight. Then they add more weight to their weight belt.:P

When people use their risers (front) for turns, they use dive loops which are made out of 1" material on both Type 17 and Type VIII risers. :)

I think bigger jumpers will likely not be adding weight. ;)

Not everyone uses dive loops when they use their front risers. And most don't use them for rear riser turns, stalls, etc.

When I am opening and need to veer away from someone else before stowing my slider, I use my fronts or rears without taking the time to put my fingers in my dive loops.

When I used to do CRW, I wouldn't always use dive loops to get myself into position.

For me. Smaller risers are much easier to grab and maneuver with.

I don't recommend small risers for all of my customers. Just the majority.
