councilman24 37 #1 September 12, 2009 Nope, not running from the law. We had a charity event today in support of the families of fallen officers and Taser was there to do demos. Full 5 secs. Not a lot of fun while it was going on but immediate recovery. Not as bad as I expected. I went first as a City Councilman and an old fat man to shame the police cadets that were there into going through with it.I'm old for my age. councilman24 37 #3 September 12, 2009 I was talking to the recruits there and found out that not all departments require Taser armed officers to have been Tased. After going through it I think this is a mistake. It certainly changed my opinion of what it was going to be like. Some like I imagined and some not. I guess I'd advocate anyone, but especially officers, that carries a Taser to have experienced it. I'd like to try it again to see what I could do during it. Probably not much but I did conciously change from yelling OOOOOOOOOOO to STOP,STOP,STOP.... So brain and vocal cords still worked. It was nowhere as bad as I expected. Not that it didn't hurt or I could do anything but it just wasn't all that bad. Now pepper spray? That I'll pass on. I'm old for my age. theonlyski 8 #5 September 12, 2009 Yeah, tazers suck... But I am federally certified to carry/use them now. Im so happy that its a lifetime cert. Quotedont they only taze you with 50'000 instead of 100'000 volts!? doesnt change the fact you've had the balls to step up tough! The tazers that most cops carry now use 'Neuro Muscular Incapacitation' Im not sure voltage is a big difference, but damn it sucks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Px_N2WLE1yo&feature=related When we got our certifications, they told us that the only difference between this one and the ones they hit us with was they had a higher pulse per second than the 5 pps on the X26 that cops around here carry."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

theonlyski 8 #7 September 12, 2009 The stuff they hit us with was 2% OC, but it was 5.3 million scovial heating units... for comparison, the bear spray is 10 million SHU and that would blind a human."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

captain1976 0 #15 September 13, 2009 I don't think tasers are a joke. Over 300 people have died from being tased. Even a police officer has been charged with manslaughter for the death of a man he shot with a taser and charges are being considered in another incident. For those who have to get tased as a job requirement, I would tell their boss to shove it.Too much risk of cardiac arrest to be playing with it. I do believe in them for self defense, but cops should stick with the old night stick or get more backup and manhandle the suspect. DSE 5 #17 September 13, 2009 Kinda fun, isn't it? But...I'm confident there is a big difference between knowing the tasing is coming, and having it come as a surprise while amped up on adrenaline. My elder brother is chief of law enforcement and former president of the Utah Peace Officer's Association. At their fundraisers each year for the Fallen Officer memorial, they allow people to be tased for a donation. I've gone every year. They do have you sign a waiver, not much different than skydiving. Read this atleast you will be an informed expert: http://www.taser.com/company/pressroom/Documents/State%20of%20ECDs%20Jeff%20Ho%20MD.pdf For what its worth, I was a cop years before the taser. Requiring officers to get tased is like requiring them to get stung by a bee. You never know who is allergic and may die from the incident. Some people have bad wiring and will not recover from a tasing. Rubber bullets can be lethal too. Both are preferable to shooting a person with a bullet, since the risk of death is significantly less. I think tasers have a place in police enforcement - but they should not be used lightly, as in a charity event.Trapped on the surface of a sphere.
