lpdwntnd 0 #1 August 26, 2009 I went through my first jump course and did my first two jumps. I wanted to buy beer but my instructor keep talking about this tattoo he has always wanted. I have been a professional tattoo artist for 4 years now. I was thinking of giving him the tattoo for free as a thank you for training me as well as he did(my first jump my lines were twisted and my riser was stuck and I had no fear just right away did what he beat into my head). Do you folks think it's a nice gesture to offer him that free tattoo? I'm also thinking of buying him a few rounds as well!Stop looking at me
LisaH 0 #2 August 26, 2009 The price of the tattoo is probably close to the cost of your next AFF jump. Give him a tip if you feel obligated. Knowing how to get out of a line twist is his job to teach. Get your license, and if you two remain friends, think about giving the tattoo then. Oh yea, and beer when you graduate. Just my opinion. Edited to add: Offering a few beers after hours is a good thing. They deserve it. Be yourself! MooOOooOoo

cocheese 0 #6 August 26, 2009 Charge regular price for the tattoo. Use the money for more jumps. Everyone wins. Except for those of us who think tattoos are not a good idea.

tigra 0 #8 August 26, 2009 A few drinks is a nice gesture, a free tattoo is overkill. He might think you are more interestd in him than skydiving. That makes some guys a little uncomfortable! And no offense to you or your skill as a tattoo artist, but I personally would not accept a tattoo, free or not, without first looking at the artist's work. I've seen way too many ugly or just plain bad tattoos on other people!

You'd be hearing about this bitchin' Camaro he has always wanted. If you want to give him a discount, sure, but I don't think he's earned free.

The Tat is a good idea - if he's going to teach you the rest of AFF for comped prices as well. You are a pro - he is a pro - you both get paid to do what you do. He may be open to trade lessons for tats, but until then - beer is the excepted currency for currency.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
Nataly 38 #12 August 27, 2009 Personally, I think a tat is a MUCH bigger commitment than having a bit of fun jumping out of planes. It's such early days.. Do you really want to have such a strong link with a guy you barely know? What if he regrets the tat? What if you end up staying in the sport and not liking each-other very much? IMO, the reason why thank-you beers are great is that it encourages you to socialise and get to know people. It's a great way for newbies to have a relaxed chat with more experienced jumpers & you often learn a few things here and there (obviously, when alcohol is in the mix, take any advice with a pinch of salt). Sounds like what he did was standard AFF training.. He didn't properly "save your life" - you did that yourself by paying attention to what you were taught. I say stick to beer. The guy was doing his job, and you've already paid him for that. Thanking him with a tat is kind of a big deal - thanking him with beer is an appropriately small gesture that will probably be very appreciated.
