Yes, and the reverse should be true also:
"You must dial a '1' in front of the phone number. Please hang up and try again."
Well, if they know I need a "1", why not just add it themselves and go ahead and put my call through?

with all of today's technologies.... i would think people would quit saying dial when referring to inputting a cell phone, i have never even seen a phone with a rotary DIAL.

Hey, that would be fun! Have a party for a bunch of 20-somethings, have a buddy call your number and make that phone ring. Everybody's going what the fuck is that? :D

My parents still have one in the basement, mounted on the wall, and it still works! :S

Here in Nova Scotia,Canada my cell with Bell Aliant does that automatically. All the numbers stored are local but if I am out of the area a message comes on saying " this is a long distance number, charges will apply"

I would have thought this was standard, but I guess not.

Being a language freak, that's occurred to me, too. I'm the last of the generation to see dial phones as an adult. I'd expect the term will eventually die off as my generation ages, and passes on to blue skies.

Oddly enough, you never need a 1 when dialing from a vell phone. Go figure that 1 out... :S

Or more likely we will be explaining to our grandchildren why its called a dial when there's no dial. Bits of language like that tend to hold on.

And while we are at it, how about the ability to ignore the 9 that I input first because that's what I have to do all day at work.
