Jumpervint 0 #1 August 3, 2009 Story coming out of Lost Prairie is on Saturday John pulled and opened for an unconscious jumper, struck in the head on exit. Jumper came to under canopy and landed. Can't wait to hear John's version.. . . . . "Make it hard again." JohnDeere 0 #3 August 3, 2009 LP is not the best place to be open real high if your not facing the right direction and in control! Hope the jumper is ok. kbordson 8 #4 August 3, 2009 We should probably wait for more information before making posts of critique or praise. But... that being said, I would prefer to trust that John apprised the situation and did what he thought was safest for that jumper and for the others in the sky. grannyinthesky 0 #5 August 3, 2009 The story is true and the jumper is fine. I saw him this morning and he said he had a headache and sort of stiff neck. All I said is LP is not the best place for this, but never said he didnt do the correct thing ummmm.... there are VERY FEW "best places" for being unconscious at 13k feet. But... you are right that during boogies when the skies are full presents MUCH more of a challenge. I was just saying that since I (and likely MANY people) wasn't there at the time.... waiting to hear the "rest of the story" is probably wiser.
JohnDeere 0 #11 August 3, 2009 Im waiting for info to, all i was saying that LP is not the best place ( not cause of boogie, but due to the area around DZ) for this.Nothing opens like a Deere! You ignorant fool! Checks are for workers!

karenmeal 0 #13 August 3, 2009 The details of the freefall collision are unclear - collision due to a funnel is the most likely bet that I've heard. The jumper told me that he woke up under an open parachute thinking, "This isn't Ritzville." He was aware enough under canopy to follow other jumpers down and land safely. He appeared to be doing OK today, but decided to stay on the ground for the rest of the boogie. The jumper did have an AAD, but I think having someone like John take care of business for you is a much better scenario. ladydyver 0 #14 August 3, 2009 He is doing fine - he is a close friend of mine; doc and i checked on him through the night. I appreciate both John and the other jumper who realized that he was in trouble and taking action. It could have been a very ugly ending to a great boogie.DPH # 2 "I am not sure what you are suppose to do with that, but I don't think it is suppose to flop around like that." ~Skootz~ I have a strong regard for the rules.......doc! drdive 0 #15 August 3, 2009 And jumper regained consciousness under canopy, was disoriented and confused, saw canopies flying and flew by instinct and landed hard with half flare. He continued to act concussed but had an otherwise normal neuro exam and went to a local ER for evaluation. He had a cypress, but I think the extra altitude he was opened at was instrumental in giving him the time to go on instinct and land safely. If he had opened under a cypress fire, he would have had a higher likelihood of landing injury IMO. Thanks, John - you are my hero too. Doc"We saved your gear. JohnMitchell 16 #19 August 3, 2009 Hi Everyone, We just got home from LP.So . . . It was a 12 way jump from 13K. I was docked on Jim Lennox's leg. It built to about 10 people, then a hard dock on the far side funneled it. I saw it going under so I dropped off and slid back and up. It was a well developed funnel, with lots of vertical. I watched people spitting out the bottom and start flying again. But then I saw one person take a few extra rolls and go drifting off the side, down low. It was Jim Lennox. He ended up belly to earth, head turned to the left, and his left hand pressed against his full face visor, as if holding his face or head after an impact. He was obviously injured, so I dove down and docked main side. After I docked, I shook him to try and get a response, but got none. I found he was just barely stable; I could tip and roll him at will. He stayed frozen in that position, left hand pressed to his face. Jeff Sanders swooped in to the front, looking into Jim's face, waving at him, trying to get a reaction, but there was none. Jeff shook his head "no" and gave me the thumbs up. I was looking over my shoulder for traffic. It looked to me that everyone above me was off to the side,, working on reforming after the funnel, so I deployed Jim's main at about 5500' and tracked off. It was not a clear cut decision for me. I knew that Jim was in trouble and needed to slow down and get some time, so I did that for him. I was worried about traffic above us, and checked the best I could before pulling him out. I thought about waving off with one hand, but didn't know it that would be effective, or just draw a crowd. I saw blue above us, so I threw. Most of us have AAD's now, but we know they fire very low. I had a friend that got knocked out in freefall. Her AAD fired, but she received fatal injuries on her uncontrolled landing. I figured more time under canopy, the better for Jim. Glad I could be helpful. A big thanks to Jeff Sanders for the backup. It's good to have friends, isn't it? I wish I could learn to swoop that fast everyday. I still don't remember how I got down to Jim that quick, I was just suddenly there. Hey everybody, be careful.
