shah269 0 #1 July 31, 2009 So I call up my insurance co to see what the gig is with my bum leg. Due me being taken to a non member hospital I was a little worried. But then again hay what choice did I have? What was I going to say? "Hay guys, thanks for picking me up and all but can we drive the extra two hours to a hospital that can deal with my insurance companies bs? Thanks!" So any way I call up and well the bill to the insurance co is $50k. Hu...my leg now cost the same price as an Audi TT! And now I'm really worried....i whip out the calculator. If these bean counters want they can really screw with me. And even if they don't and I have to pay 5%....man that's $2.5k! How do you guys do it? My god? One broken leg and I'm looking at an early end to a great sport. I can't afford to dish out $2.5k+ and continue to progress? And it's not like I'm getting any younger! I'm 32. So if I'm out...the odds of me getting back in aren't that high. And honestly that really saddens me but then again I do have to deal with reality. I could be looking down the barrel of a $10k medical bill. And so I got to thinking, I couldn't be the only guy who has gotten hurt in this sport. How have those that have gotten hurt gotten back up? Did you start stripping for the blind? Did you sell a body part or two? Perhaps some vital fluids?Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. wmw999 2,534 #13 July 31, 2009 You're being responsible in your approach. That's a good thing. Some folks do it by not getting hurt. Of course, that's easier said than done sometimes. But this is an expensive sport, between gear, training, jumps, and potential injuries. Not to mention the wear and tear on relationships when both parties don't skydive. You can go through the bills with a fine-toothed comb to make sure that your insurance company is only being charged what it should be. You can probably find out if skydiving is excluded pretty easily, but if it's a policy through work it's much less likely to be excluded. And, you didn't start skydiving until AFTER you had that policy. As far as how to save up the money, well, dunno. Different people do it different ways, but I'll bet you can make it happen. shah269 0 #14 July 31, 2009 Yeah I've been at this job for 7 years and this is my first real injury with this provider. And i'llhave to check their web page to see if skydiving is covered. And the paying for the gear and the flights and the classes I can do.....it's a little at a time. But if these bean counters come back with a $25k hell even a $5k bill....yeah there goes lunch. I can't afford to dish out $2.5k+ and continue to progress? I noticed that the "Audi TT" stood out immediately as something that doesn't fit in this picture. If you're driving a $50k car, you can afford to pay the $2.5k medical bill. And get back into skydiving. Sell the $50k car, and buy a cheaper one. The proceeds should cover your insurance bill, and the savings on your monthly car payment should pay for your skydiving. Which do you want to do the most: to drive an Audi TT, or skydive? tigra 0 #20 July 31, 2009 The way my insurance works is if I am more than 90 miles from home and its considered an emergency, it is covered. When I was injured and treated at the "local" hospital, including surgery and an overnight stay, I only had to pay my standard co-payment, but I did need to stay on top of my insurance company pretty much throughout my whole recovery. Its very easy for the clerk processing the bills to put one in the wrong pile- you know the one that says "DENIED" in big red letters? And there are a LOT of bills associated with a broken leg. I assume you provided your insurance information to the hospital that treated you? And that the doctors at that hospital determined that it was in your best interest to treat you there that day instead of releasing you and having you go to your own doctor or hospital 2 hours away? dks13827 3 #22 July 31, 2009 what you might do , Shah, should do,, is start a letter writing campaign of protests about the denial, if it happens. 2 letters a week,, polite letters, stating that you had no choice for the emergency treatment......... that should be covered. I honestly believe that the new free coverage we all get will not be covering jumping. why should they ? people shouldnt jump out of airplanes anyway.
