Nataly 38 #28 July 31, 2009 It's unfortunate that you got injured so early in the sport.. You were probably just at the stage where you didn't fully appreciate the dangers, when WHAM you learned the hard way.. If we were to be really honest, very few of us would admit to being safe 100% of the time (especially in the early days).. But look.. It's all a bit too early for you to really decide whether it's "over" or not. Just concentrate on getting better, and see from there. If you're going to do these kinds of sports, make sure you're covered in terms of insurance.. As you've found out, it's a massive pain to overlook this point. Hope you get well soon.. shah269 0 #29 July 31, 2009 Just spoke to two friends who are in the insurance industyr. Their words to me were to relax and odds are I'll be ok and I wont have to dish out any more than say $500. God that felt good to hear that but I'm still nervous. You know, I've been driving my self nuts over the past three weeks, worried to death about comming back in when my leg is better worried I would screw up and get hurt again....I really didn't need the finanical pressure on top if it. Skydiving is a gift from god to man kind. NO joke. I never felt as happy and at peace with the world than I did during free fall. My wife would say when I came back down my eyes were a differnt color, lighter somehow.....and to loose this....to not be able to go back..... Here is to safe landings and thank you all for your help. Here is hoping for the best. tigra 0 #30 July 31, 2009 The real question is whether or not the "out of network" and pre approval for services apply in an emergency situation when you are out of town or X number of miles from home.

YES! If it is a broken bone and there is a chance of internal bleeding then yes. Due to the fact that you may die of blood loss during transport. Now if it were a sprained ankle then no. But if it were broken yes. And with me it was defenitly a broken bone with the potential of inernal bleeding.Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. kbordson 8 #32 July 31, 2009 I got in this conversation a little late... and you already have all the info that you pobably need. Insurance companies do TRY to wriggle out of obligations, but it should be easy for you to appeal those initial decisions and get them to pay. Florida was out of network for a Kansas City girl, but just be persistant and have the hospital and billers resubmit the bills to the insurance
shah269 0 #33 July 31, 2009 Just got the first bill. $100 for the ride to the hospital. Ok tha'ts not bad. kmills0705 0 #34 August 1, 2009 You really should know your policy. Many insurance companies have a yearly out of pocket maximum. Check that. Most do have provisions for out of Network. And from what you quoted, you are only responsible for the percentage of allowed charges. Do you realize the contractual agreements with providers are quite low. For example if a procedure cost 5K, the insurance company might have a contractual agreement to pay 2K (and yes it really is that big of a difference) and of that 2K you would pay 30%.... or $600. Then you really should have an out of pocket max. Damn people know your insurance coverage. Also I find it odd you are ready to hang up skydiving because of some medical bills... all based on "ifs" and big "ifs"... seems odd to me.Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Yeah, you are 100% right, it's just something you don't think about....which is wrong. Anyhow, I'll be happy to review your policy carefully. Please send me a retainer for $1,500. Ka-ching!

mdrejhon 8 #38 August 1, 2009 471 jumps and no broken bones yet - I'm covered in Canada at least by the government, and the situation in a lot of Europe is similar. However, I'm leery about travelling to the states with no insurance, so I've taken out travel insurance policies (about 30 dollars per vacation) that doesn't have an exclusion against recreational skydiving. Take a break. Jump again. In a year. Or few. With some premium bulletproof insurance, verified by a dropzones' recommendation. And maybe move to another town, sometimes $80,000 in another city is 'richer' than $120,000 in the original city.
shah269 0 #39 August 1, 2009 I love my DZ! Great guys! Just wish they had more updated gear! Well at least the one I jumped on wasn't that updated...wooh! Even on good days that rig came down hard! A few days after my broken leg another guy who weighs a solid 50lbs less than me also got hurt but not as bad. Time to maybe ask them to upgrade their student/rental gear!Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. normiss 851 #40 August 3, 2009 "came down hard"???? Isn't that why we flare our canopies so that doesn't happen? Something doesn't sound right about this.... Please discuss with your instructors!

Please discuss with your instructors! There's a lot more information in the other original thread that explained what happened. shah has talked to his instructors a lot already, apparently. He has claimed his own fault, but it was obviously not helped by gear and physique. dropzone.com contributors (myself included) came to this conclusion of a wide combination of factors: Old F111 Falcon 265 and a half-flare (the student error), heavy weight (220 gear weight) as a short guy, short arms making full-arm-length flare difficult. karenmeal 0 #43 August 4, 2009 QuoteDamn people know your insurance coverage. While I have to agree to some extent... my insurance coverage is a ~200 page book that I am not about to memorize. Plus, policies change all the time and insurance companies aren't required to provide notification of this.
