Custom Canopy

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I am a newbie and I am looking for a canopy that has the design of the American flag. I will need a student chute. There are a lof of British Union Jacks out there so there must be someone willing to do this design. Does anyone know of a place that does this?

Thanks,

Andre

Based on my experience, Aerodyne offers the most cost effective custom designs.

The Pilot or Solo would be good choices. You may even consider a Triathlon from them.

PM me some details with your experience, and I can help you decide some of the more important details.

I just called my skydiving center (Kutztown, PA) and they told me to be careful because if I get the wrong canopy for my weight I am going to be stuck with it.

After talking with an instructor there I think I am going to go over all of my options with them when I am there later in the month. I need to consider a canopy that will take me from a student and beyond.

If you're willing to go for something with a flag "theme" rather than an exact duplicate, you can get something like the picture attached, for a much cheaper rate. Specifying your color choices for each cell is very common and doesn't add much to the cost.

I would suggest renting for the first 25-50 jumps and buying a longer-term canopy afterwards. Because very few people still fly their first canopy beyond the 50th jump... The student canopy flies very slow and will cause you to fly backwards in strong winds. You may end up being be grounded half of the time! (If you're put on a light wingload like the dropzone put me on, only 0.65 pounds per 1 square feet of canopy)

I didn't buy mine till my 60th jump. Now I chose a size (1.1 lbs/feet wingloading) that I am pretty comfortable with yet allows me to keep learning for a long time now, probably for several hundred jumps!

Go with John Rich's suggestion and you won't pay any extra andyou will be just as "patriotic" as if yo uhad the whole 13 stripes and 50 stars put over head.

You can get any parachute maker to do that design but would choose a Flight Concepts personnaly since I have seen about 50 red white and blue star traks, sharp chuters and furys from them (plus a few of thier zippy models that way!):P

Sheesh! They could've at least gotten a 9-cell to make it look more like an American flag!

If you look where his hands are you will see he is in deep brakes. There are not many nine cell canopies that can make that steep of an approach.

Very often "flag" canopies are used by people that do demos.

That is very observant of you, little grasshopper. (Kung Fu TV-mode)

Yeah, this was supposed to help me get all those lucrative July 4th demo jumps. It is, er, was a Triathalon 260 - zero-P, but stable even in deep brakes. I've since had that canopy blow up on a hard opening after about 800 jumps on it. It's just a patriotic rag now.

... actually, Sparky, you CAN make that kind of "deep brakes" approach on a 9-Cell canopy... the approach may go plenty steep... its the landing that's really gonna likely SUCK!

No you (not me)can make that kind of "steep" approach on a 9-cell. Just let me know when you do it, I would like to watch.;)

No thanks! I'll leave that experiment to the younger crowd out there... I've already gotten my "bad landing -- broken ankle" check dive...

;)
