Advice for kid joining US Army?

tell him that if he goes to a college with Army ROTC he will get a free education (providing he recieves the scholarship which he most likely will) and when he graduates he will get to go to Ranger school no matter what. He WILL be given that opportunity seeing as every ROTC graduate does.

Little advice, nothing is "free", you pay for it in one way or another.

I can't really add anything more than what others have already said except for one thing...

I would suggest that he take his ASVAB and score a little higher, 110+ is needed to enter a lot of Army schools later down the road.

I truly have a lot of respect for folks who join the armed forces (as long as they're not screw ups and "I'm running away from my past life" types) in today's political climate. Nearly 8 years in and an E6, I've had the pleasure of serving, leading, and becoming friends with the best people in the world.

Not sure if he really knows what he's getting into, but he fully expects (and desires) combat. He doesn't need any money for college (trust fund exists for that).

EDIT: As it currently stands (hasn't signed yet), he's set up for 11B, AIT, RIT (RIP?). Thanks.

Sounds like me 22 years ago. I spent 7 years as an Infantry Paratrooper and think it was possibly the best 7 years of my life.

Make sure he gets everything in writing as stated above. My younger brother wanted RIP but was told they didn't have any contract slots available, "they will ask for volunteers at the end of OSUT for RIP and Airborne". That didn't happen and he got stuck in a leg unit in Germany. [:/]

Whatever he decides tell him thanks for his service. B|

First, thanks to you all for the info. He just signed the paperwork yesterday. Apparently, the only positions available in infantry at the time he signed up were for cooks. He wants to be a Ranger, and had to take what was available towards that goal.

Here's what my sister said he signed up for:

"He has enlisted with the position title of PARACHUTE RIGGER FOR 4 years with
a title of US ARMY AIRBORNE RANGER.

Dates:
Location:

1/11/2010 BASIC LWood
9 weeks

3/19 Initial Airborne? Jackson
3 weeks

4/09 Rigger Training? Benning
4 weeks

5/10 AIT/RIP? Jackson

Mickey is very proud and very excited. He has already started running to
begin training and will do some weekly pre-training with the recruiter group
here locally."

Should look like this:
9(ish) weeks Ft LWood (Basic)
3 weeks Ft Benning (Airborne)
12 weeks (I think) Ft Lee (Rigger AIT)
Then RIP and Ranger school.

Im not 100% if he has to go to airborne before or during the riggers course, but he has to make it thru airborne to keep that MOS.

No use having a rigger that cant jump ;)

Yeah, my sister mentioned in the email that she might have got some of the stuff out of order. They were in a hurry to catch a flight to Australia yesterday morning.

Do riggers and other support positions go through RIP ? What would be the point ?

It has always been my understanding that just like airborne school if you flunk RIP, you become needs of the army. I some how doubt if a Ranger battalion needs a rigger, they would send him packing if he failed RIP.

What is the AIT/RIP at Fort Jackson for ? Is there a Ranger battalion there now ?

Well, I'll be honest here, with what you said your nephews goals were, the Rigger MOS was not the way to go. Based on the info you provided, at best, he can hope to be assigned to one of the Ranger regiments as a Rigger with a Ranger tab. Or he can be sent to any unit in the Army that requires rigger support.

Army Riggers work their asses off quite honestly and there is very little that can be considered fun about it IMO. He can expect to pack a lot of static line rounds and or cargo chutes. It will be quite sometime before he can even expect to touch a square canopy, if ever at all, depending on what unit he is assigned to. If the unit he is assigned to has square canopies he would have to go back for RAM Air canopy training at Ft Lee and there are people at the unit that have more seniority than him so even then it could be a great while. Riggers have a very slow career progression rate as there are limited slots/positions, so quite literally, someone has has to die/get promoted/separate from service before someone else can be promoted or move to another position.

Of all the prior MOS's out there, especially non combat arms, that I have seen make it into SF, I can only recall 1 that was a rigger.

Best of wishes to your nephew and his goal to go SF. Tell him to keep his goal in front of him and if he wants it bad enough, he'll make it happen.

+ 1. I didn't have the heart to be brutally honest. I think his nephew may have been a bit over anxious, and let the recruiter take advantage of him. If he didn't see what he wanted, he should have deferred and came back a week later. MOS slots change on a daily basis. Although if he has signed the contract he is probably SOL.

Yeah, I kind of wondered about the rigger deal too. It's possible I got crappy info from my sister, but it's just as likely he wanted a done deal before leaving for Australia and got hustled (he traveled 75 miles to sign, and probably didn't have access to advice from his ex-Ranger friend.) I'll try to find out more, but as of now, the Army owns his ass! He's a smart kid, and if he wants to be an active Ranger, he'll find a way to do it.
