warpedskydiver 0 #3 July 14, 2009 That needs a GPS system and Ramjets. Some heat resistant coatings would help. Maybe if it was all made from Carbon Fiber since that would withstand more than steel. Or a ceramic coating. A fleet of those would be nice. UCAVs would be very nervous

warpedskydiver 0 #7 July 15, 2009 An onboard camera and a controller linked through a laptop will work wonders. Add in a HUD display and you are all set. A GPS could make it autonomous. Heck you could program it to land itself.

Last night, I saved my Raptor 50 after an engine stall while inverted at about 20 feet high. Heart stopping fun.The clunk line on the main tank split and fell off in the tank making the header tank empty. In 400 or so flights, this is only the second time the engine has stalled. Both times inverted. Both times a big bounce at the end, but i saved it. 50% skill, 50% luck

ryoder 1,590 #12 July 16, 2009 Quote sweet, but my luck I would crash it the first time I flew it. In the late '80's a guy in Ft Worth TX built an XB-70 about that same size. He took it out to a local airport for it's first flight, and the local TV news crew was there to film it, and put it on the evening news. It accelerated down the runway, then the nose suddenly popped up and it took off at a 45 degree angle. At ~75 feet it paused, then tail-slid back into the runway in a spectacular crash.I learned later that the problem was the thing sat nose low on it's gear, so when it accelerated, the canard pressed the nose down hard against the runway. When he finally gave the canard full nose-up pitch, it popped off the runway so abruptly he could not get the nose down before it stalled."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. justinb138 0 #13 July 16, 2009 Quote Awesome stuff ! any idea what that setup costs ? I'd guess somewhere around 10-20k, if not more. Some of the RC turbine engines are $5k+ each.
