Gate Check isn't always an option on larger flights. When flying from Philly - Charlotte on a full flight with my rig in a bag when getting on the Flight attendent said there may not be room for my bag and she said she'd check it.

I asked, "Gate check it?" and she said no, regular luggage check.

Luckily there was space on the plane for my rig. :)

>Well if you want to take more than 5 oz's of stuff these days you pretty much have to check a bag. I had hookknives I wanted to take so there was no avoiding it.

You've exaggerated beyond belief here.

>I traveled last weekend and since I had to check a bag and pay for it I brought more stuff that I probably would have if like in the "old days" you got a bag or two with your flight price.

Yea... it's pretty damn cheap that the airlines do that. Unfortunately, it is just another one of the ways they are trying to get around their fuel costs. (Which are actually quite low compared to Jet A is for general aviation. The airlines have always paid a fraction for Jet A compared to what GA pays. Think 3 dollars less per gallon (at least) difference. The hard part for the airlines is that fewer people have the funds to buy tickets these days, thus, to keep people buying they keep the prices rediculously low (as compared to what it costs the airline for the flight) and ends up underselling several routes a day because not enough people flew on them to pay for the flight.
Underselling is so bad in some places, that the city the airline flies to will often compensate the airline for each time the flight stops there. They pay x number of seats to see an airplane touch down simply to keep the service. When the airline can't use this to their advantage with a physically full flight, they end up finding whatever way they can to screw you. This comes in the form of paying for bags. (theres a funny video online where airlines make you pay for seat belts, access to lavatories and oxygen masks... its pretty funny)

>The problem is impression. Since we the consumers feel like the airlines are trying to nickel and dime and screw us over with fees, we try and screw back with carryon suitcase and super large check suitcases. It's a vicious cycle...

And they are trying to nickel and dime you. It is quite vicious.

edit: Unfortunately, it doesn't keep your bag from getting effed up by busy baggage handlers. I hope I never have to do that shit again.

I've seen that vid... It is sorta funny.

Ya know I realize it's tough to survive in any business but I'm sick of big companies (in all industries) whining about it and getting government $$$ or discounts because they sell their "products" at a loss.

If a city wants to pay them to fly their when the route is a money loser, they should either do so on a sliding scale or a flate rate where they make $$$ just on that or at least break even.

Of course the biggest issue with all of these large companies is there aren't really large companies anymore. They're a conglomeration of subsidiaries, franchises, merged entities, etc. which happen to be operating under the same name. Sorta like mini governments... Even within, things are usually so cost centerized and departmentalized any operating efficiencies that could be gained by combining like groups, data and other resources is such a political and territorial battle most don't even try so just like government, they just raise prices (taxes)when they need more $$$ when their costs go up.

Yep. You asked.

God-given RIGHT A:
Don't ask permission. Don't ask if there's room. Don't let the sour-ass at check-in suggest that you check it.

Like most American industries, the airlines are based on a philosophy of getting away with the least effort possible unless LESS is possible.

I'm gotta say - your attitude is not helping you or the airlines. It is sad but true that people don't care about doing a good job anymore. Try getting your car repaired or your home repaired and you will run into the same thing. :(:(

And I gotta say the attitudes a lot of the flying public has doesn't help them either. You need me to help you with something? First thing don't treat me like a piece of shit with an attitude like this one

***God-given RIGHT A:
Don't ask permission. Don't ask if there's room. Don't let the sour-ass at check-in suggest that you check it.

I work the maintenance department so my customer interactions are very low but when I do I do my very best to help them with what they need and if I don't know the answer or solution I find someone who does. But if someone drops an attitude like the one above don't be surprised if I don't bend over backwards to help. I have to admit I rarely get to the terminal anymore just because I don't want to interact with the public. From what I have seen over the years you would be shocked and what people demand for no other reason that just to be a pain in the ass.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I'm sick of airlines treating their customers like cattle and our luggage like shovels full of cow shit.

You get what you pay for. Everybody wants cheap ass basement level airfares so why should the service be any different?

So by your answer I am guessing that you condone this then?

Wow!

Even if I go to the dollar store, I expect the items that I purchase there to be whole and intact. If I go to a discount supply store, I still expect the warranties to be valid. If I fly somewhere, I expect there to be at least SOME intelligence in the baggage handler that is making $10/hr.

No way! In no way do I condone this! Sometimes shit happens and things get broke. It happens! What more can I say?:(

OK - how about for twice what the average person here works for?:|

I know some project managers that don't make 20.00 per hour.>:(

Yes but when shit happens rather than address and admit THEIR issue the standard airline philosophy is duck, dodge, deny. :S

If they'd just either own up to shit they damage or break or institute a policy stating that your bags and its contents should be able to survive being thrown from "x" height, fine.

Another reason customers are fed up with the most big businesses: they're still so damned inconsistent: service, quality, etc.

Well if you think thats sooo great go put in an appilcation!

Not the point - it's just that if someone is qualified to make 20/hr, they should earn it - not piss on everyone's property.

Assuming a normal market (no interference from Unions / Gov't), if they're not earning it they won't be making it for long.

Typically people make what other people are willing to pay them. If a project manager isn't making $20/hr (assuming that isn't the average pay for them in the area), then there's something interfering with the market, or they're not a very good project manager.

Simply because you think it's you 'God given right' to do this, doesn't mean that airline staff have to give a monkeys about it. They have rules to adhere to in the execution of their job too. Aren't you now becoming part of the problem - the pain-in-the-arse customer that tmakes it more difficult next time the airline reviews its policies?

As Spot says - the simple solution is to expect (and pack for!) the worst. If you can't do this, find an alternate method of shipping. Being difficult often just means you miss your flight...

In other news, my 3 guitars should be arriving in California next week after a 6 week sea voyage. It'll be interesting to see if the dock handlers / customs agents are any better! :D:D

Rook, what I'm talking about is NOT throwing a negative attitude, and certainly not about asking anyone to bend over backward. It's getting what I know I'm entitled to, and what's readily available.

I say "don't ask" because every time you ask, there's another opportunity for an underpaid, overstressed, "public"-hating employee in an itchy blue blazer to say "NO" for no good reason.
If I've paid my money, and I know there's space on the plane for my guitar, then whom exactly am I screwing by making use of that space??

If I could trust my most valued possessions to the hands of a baggage handler, this wouldn't even be a topic for internet blah-blah.
So it it MY fault that I can't?
