I can recall a time when big, over-sized guys were brought-in to take-out certain players on the opposing team were called 'goons' or 'thugs' or 'enforcers'. Now, that type player is said to have a 'big physical presence' or a team that has several players of that type as having 'physicality'. :D A rose is a rose!

there is a big difference between a goon and a cheap shot...sticking out a knee is just an attempt to injure and thats not on.

A big goon is gonna come out and lay a big hit, or drop the gloves

I was trying to point-out how 'politically correct' hockey has gotten. I know the difference between a cheap-shot and a goon.

my bad, read it wrong ;) but yes you are right, long gone are the days of "if you hit (insert star player name) i will take ur f'n head off"

turned into a pretty chippy game at both end though..fun to watch

No big deal. I probably, could've worded it a bit better, too.
I think, Bettman has done more to screw-up a perfectly great game into a mor 'crowd pleasing' 'family friendly' game. Some things with the game got a bit out of hand during the 70's and into the eighties and did need some attention. Bettman has tried to speed-up the game and get higher scoring games. Some of the best games I've ever seen were 1-0 after 3-periods.

I think the speed of today's game and the freeing up of the skilled players is good. Some of the anti-violence PC-ness gets to me but these guys are all bigger, stronger and faster than in the past and the skull inside the brain hasn't improved in toughness so protecting players against concussion causing possibly career ending head injuries is good.

Otherwise I can't stand Bettman. Little weasel. He's just got too much of the small man officiousness about him.

I can sure see the need to protect players from head injuries and I like the speedof the game. Like you, I can't stand Bettman either. Also, the fact that he wants hockey in parts of the country that don't really support the game is silly. Look at the Coyotes.

I don't know just what you call a dive but, Franzen did not dive in that situation. Yes, Getzlaf 'sucker-punched' him while he was down. I also think that the Annaheim Ducks are a bunch of no-talent, over-stuffed thugs who by some freak of nature, at times, have the ability to ice-skate backwards. You like 'em I don't! You can say what you want about the Detroit Red Wings, that's one of your freedoms in this country. That's my last word on the matter.

wahoo!!!! pens pull it out in OT

Looks good on em since gonchar is out, the D for the pens really stepped it up and the refs let both sides play, wasnt too bad at all, some HUGE hits from both sides

i think washington is running into the problem of no one else is scoring but Ov, he has just as many goals as his team combined, cant win like that.

pens are getting all kinds of secondary scoring.
now their D is taking it to another level filling in for gonchar.

now to watch the van game, its a gooder too, some great games in these playoffs!!!

A team can't get too far at any time if, they have only one goal scorer. Then too, Ovechkin sees to it he's in the right place at the right time. Look at Detroit. You never know who, on their team is going to score a goal because they are all capable. On the other hand, there's a bit more depth with the Pens. They at least, have more than one goal scorer. I should be watching that series a bit closer. This has really been a darned good play-off season. Must be driving the Vegas odds-makers nuts. :D

Wow! Those young Blackhawks never quit do they? I know I'm supposed to be cheering for the Canucks because they are the only Canadian team left but I'm digging seeing the Blackhawks with a good team.

I'm thinking we're going to see:

Pens - Canes

Wings - Hawks

and likely a Wings - Pens final.

The Pens and 'Canes were the two hottest teams the last 20 regular season games.
The 'Hawks have GREAT young talent.
Detroit is simply the most talented and probably best coached team in the league.
Vancouver isn't tough enough, the Caps always crumble to the Pens and...
Isn't playoff hockey the best sport in the world!!!!!!B|

haha i wouldnt wanna have to call who would win between the canes and the pens, that would be a really kick ass series.

Def wouldnt mind a rematch of last years finals, maybe a bit better outcome for the pens.

Id like to see the canucks pull of a few more wins but those blackhawks are really playing some tough hockey

Playoff hockey has been stellar so far!!!

Chicago hasn't been in the play-offs since about 1993. Now they are in them and they aren't going to slow-down. The Wings were 4-2 in the regular season against the Blackhawks but, that was the regular season.
Carolina would sure give the Pens a run for their money.
I was hoping better for the Bruins' With chicago and Detroit in the play-offs, there could've been an 'original six' finals.:D

edit to add: Wings win! Ducks fail to show-up!
