OlympiaStoica 0 #1 July 2, 2009 All I have to do is look around to know that we as Americans are in the midst of an epidemic … but reading those statistics in a news article yesterday still sounded unbelievable. In this age (and country) of 50lb toddles and 700lb adults, how do you personaly avoid being part of that statistic? And why is it that Europe (and the rest of the world for that matter) doesn't have this same problem? O

rlucus 0 #7 July 2, 2009 This is the place to discuss politics, guns, religion and any other topic you feel the need to address from your soap box. sounds like a soap box conversation to me... but to add to the discussion... I work out at least 4 times a week and pass my PT tests. I'm 5'11" and haven't not been "over weight" since I was 18. At my height 180 lbs is over weight. OlympiaStoica 0 #17 July 2, 2009 Don’t get me wrong … I’m no skinny minie myself and controlling my weight has been a life long struggle. When I can’t get into my jeans however, I get disgusted, have a get-your-head-out-of-your-arse conversation with myself, than take action. I’d never let myself go to the point where I can’t fit into an airline seat. O
AggieDave 6 #18 July 2, 2009 It depends on what they're using to generate the statistic. According to BMI, I should be cruzing walmart on a personal mobility device. According to how I look, feel and athletic ability, I'm doing fine but could stand to drop a couple of pounds. Which one should I believe? Well, the BMI is over 100 years old, based on data and statistical beliefs created while Lincoln was still alive!--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Well I overtook this smoking hot blonde going up Flagstaff Mt last week.Unfortunately, it drove my HR well up into the anaerobic range, so I soon had to stop and catch my breath. She took the opportunity to pass me, and I never caught her again. Quote Hows the training for that big climb coming? I'm planning to make a try for Evans shortly, probably on a weekday when it is less busy. I'm going to settle for doing it like everyone else does from Idaho Springs. Then I will have done the same course as the official hill climb, so I can compare my time and see just how pathetic it was. Damn! OlympiaStoica 0 #20 July 2, 2009 ... and I've seen your latest pictures, pretty "NWFlyer" ... there is a LOT less of you than it was when I met you back in December at Zhills. All that effort is reflected in the way you look and smile. I bet you feel like a million dollars too Yeah ... I'm not so sure about those "charts". Last year during my physical my doctor told me I have to lose 15 - 20lb ... at 5.8/145lb; I wanted to strangle him. If he saw me now (after my mom cooking for me for the past 2 months and being confined to my couch since my injury 6 weeks ago), I'd be way out of his "charts" for sure ... NWFlyer 2 #21 July 2, 2009 I still have weight to lose, but based on what my doctor back in Seattle told me (and she works with lots of high-level athletes) based on my height, frame, body fat percentage, etc., I won't ever fit "on the charts," even though I'll be at a healthy weight. But my point was more that you can't look at someone who is overweight at any level and have a clue where they are in their own weight management journey. I would never deny that we have a growing (pun intended) issue with weight, but it's a much more complex issue than "if you're fat you're a lazy fuck." I knew i should not have posted to this due to others taking it wrong... I am over my BMI so in the same sense I am over wt. I do exercise 3x a week as recomended however, sometimes I can not. I have many limitations to what I can and cant do. Having certain injuries i can not work out like most people. If I do I cant walk for a few weeks or am in constant pain. I do pay attention to what I eat. It is one thing to be over wt it is another to become "severe morbid obesity." 40-50lbs in my opinion is not bad and I am not talking about people in this category. I am talking about those who become 100 plus over wt. and then want to have bariatric surgery because that in their minds is the answer. I know that certain health issues cause obesity and make it very difficult to lose wt. I packed on the lbs after 3 surgeries and not being able to do anything for a few years. I have lost 30lbs and work hard to get back to where I was prior to being injured. I know others will find something in what i wrote as being mean or take it personal and I did not mean the other post nor this one to come across like that. The thing is you don't just go to sleep one night and wake up the next morning over wt. LaRusic 0 #25 July 2, 2009 BMI is a piss poor way of determining if you are over weight or not. Its way to inacurate. It even says on the instructions for the test that you are a weight lifter or an athlete then the tests will not give a true answer. North Americas problem with obeisty stems from too many kids sitting in front of the tv or computer, video games and lack of physical activity. same with the older generation. Also fast food is widely used because its quick and very readily avalible. Lack of exercise and proper diet are to blame and in general not caring about it makes it worse...everyone makes excusesThe Altitude above you, the runway behind you, and the fuel not in the plane are totally worthless Dudeist Skydiver #
