You can stay in lala land all you like but untill you open your eyes/ mind you wont see the truth! Personally... I'm infinitely more afraid of rednecks than racial minorities. Afraid of rednecks? lauraliscious 0 #105 June 18, 2009 Hey, it could have been much worse. At least she didn't use the n-word, or "coloreds". There are ignorant people everywhere. If it makes you feel better, you can try to educate them, but in my opinion in a situation like that it's best to just smile and nod, ignore the comment as best you can, and just move on. Or maybe tell her that you're not okay with that comment. I mean, you're not going to change the cashier at McDonalds world view in a few minutes. For the record, I've lived in Cincinnati, the San Francisco Bay area, Atlanta, and currently the Knoxville, TN area. The city I live in now is 94% white. NINETY-FOUR PERCENT. By far the least diverse place I've ever lived. And it's hard to tell if there's a lot of racism here, because everyone around here is white. So I hardly ever hear racist comments anymore, because it just never comes up. Yes, I think people around here are ignorant when it comes to race, probably due to the lake of diversity. But I have family members in Ohio who use the n-word and talk about cats in a barn "breeding like Mexicans". I think it's mostly caused by fear of the unknown. On another note, a man at work once asked me if all my professors in college were "queers", because all the professors he's ever known are queer. And then he started to imply that all his gay college professors were into child pornography. I just told him that I didn't know, that it didn't matter to me what the sexual orientation of my professors was, and I actually got pretty upset. He dropped the subject and hasn't ever brought it up since. It's pure ignorance. I feel kind of sorry for people who live in a world that's so small and judgemental. gmanpilot 0 #106 June 18, 2009 QuoteAll I really wanted to know was whether one racist chick in Tennessee was an accurate representation of the openness of racism in the south. Yes, unfortunately. It is very strange that otherwise good and decent people think that racism is ok. I have friends who are racists. All you can really do is set a good example and offer an educated or enlightened opinion when you get the opportunity._________________________________________ -There's always free cheese in a mouse trap. I've written this or some variation of it at least three times now (see page 3): This is why I posted in the first place. I didn't assume that she represented the whole area. It was the nonchalance with which she made the comment that made me wonder if racism was more prevalent or less hidden in the south. That's why I'm on here asking Southerners, not just assuming they're all racist. There's racism in Michigan, too, but not very open and not just as an aside to strangers. Society changed and there are people on both sides of the fence that won't let it go. Do you know that many that were sold into slavery were sold by their own people. metalslug 36 #115 June 18, 2009 Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Reply To -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's quit using the word ignorant. It implies that a person is unaware of a situation. Can't we just call it racism when that's what it is? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Racism is ignorance and cowardice walking hand in hand. ...only when applied to specific examples. I have yet to see that definition repeated in any reputable dictionary. I know people that have had bad experiences with alcohol. If such a person, or even their friends & family, subsequently avoided alcohol because they believed it would give them hangovers, or impair their health in some way, would they be considered ignorant and cowardly? ...or would they be considered prudent? ...or would they be making a simple personal choice resulting in no harm or foul towards anyone else? (Keeping in mind that it is possible to use specific kinds of alcohol responsibly with no ill effects, sometimes even having a real good time!) Until people can agree on what racism is and is not, it will always be difficult define racist behaviour.
lauraliscious 0 #116 June 18, 2009 Quotemade me wonder if racism was more prevalent or less hidden in the south. In my experience the answer is both yes and no. It is less "hidden" in the south, and more people assume it's okay to make these types of comments to complete strangers (as long as they are the right color). But I don't think that it's necessarily more prevalent. It would have been a safe assumption; and while the reasons for it are complicated, there is no excuse for it. I've lived in the Southeast for the last 30 years, been to 38 states, and visited every major city in the country. Here is the truth: The people in the Southeast, on average are far more racist than any other region in the country. If you live here and don't believe this to be true, you have not traveled much. Ultimately though, this is home and I like it here._________________________________________ -There's always free cheese in a mouse trap.

mouth 0 #125 June 21, 2009 OMG I just snorted wine on the screen. Everyone talks about Southerners using "the N word" in reference to a racial group...Please spare me as my students (who are ALL of this racial group) refer to EACH OTHER by this term of enderement on a daily basis. It is totally correct to refer to them by that term if and only if you are of the same racial group. Sorta like Italians from Brooklyn call each other Pizans (sp) and whites from the South refer toeach other as Rednecks. Get over it....if I call you purple with pink polka dots will that make it true? NO, it won't. Only behavior and actions will make any of it true. End of rant....I'll crawl back into my own little redneck corner of the world. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit.
