You have to have a static line instructor rating to hold the rope during exit, but only need a coach rating to teach and supervise those progression students in freefall. I don't know the logic behind this.

Not that I agree, but the logic is that the student on FF is *supposed* to be able to save themselves and the coach is just there to watch and give advice. Nothing lifesaving is going on, while the rope is at a lifesaving portion of the program.

Thanks everyone for the information! I am planning on going to the DZ, but just wanted enough information so that I would have a clue as to what to even Ask!

While I understand not wanting to walk out and look like you don't have a clue..... It is worse to walk out and think you know what is going on.

And instructors are used to taking people with ZERO knowledge and making them into skydivers.... So not knowing anything when you show up does not really matter.

The WORSE type of student is the one that already 'knows' what they are doing because they read it on the internet from some guy with a cool user ID.

Like I said in my first post to you.... Your best option is to talk to your local DZ folk and ignore what you are told here. As you can see.... We don't all agree on the subject and none of that really matters to your situation.

I want you to enjoy your experience and not get confused in all the BS and get all wrapped up in the things that don't matter to 99% of the skydiving world and pretty much 100% of the students.

Easy!

Ask "What do I have to do to become a skydiver?"

Anything you get off here is more likely to confuse you than help.

Welcome to dz.com where people like to give you their '2 cents' and all the advice they can dish out right before telling you, 'you shouldn't ask for advice here'. ;)

Anyway, this is actually a great resource for 'everything skydiving', and there is nothing wrong with seeking information here, but it's true that your/the dz instructors should always be the final word.

The old AFF program had 7 levels. Following the ISP, you will have 8 levels for AFF.

Melissa can find the ISP and AFF jump objectives in the Skydiver's Info Manual - CHapter 4

Free download at USPA

http://www.uspa.org/USPAMembers/Downloads/tabid/84/Default.aspx

DZ's might vary a bit from the curriculum there, so still it's best to drive 15 minutes and hang out and ask questions

My first log book came today B| ... the best was when mom looked over "WHAT do you think you're going to be doing???"

Careful where and when you say that from now on...

Had my first jump yesterday!!! (a tandem while on vacation n ocmd), I was right, I am officially addicted. The worst part was being in the plane, I couldn't wait to just get out of it!!! Thank goodness I was doing a tandem, I was so overwhelmed I never even let go of the harness to put my hands out. Most of it is such a blur! I am glad that this first jump I could just enjoy it and let the technicals be taken care of by someone else...

congrats, you will get used to the plane ride up after you ride up a few more times and even then on some of the rougher ride up, you can see even the experienced jumpers start to tighten and double check their straps as we rock around on the way up LOL

If your home dropzone does anything like mine you wont really have to trust yourself on the important things. Like landing for example; that's something someone on the other end of a radio will do for you and if they're experienced they will probably talk you into a nice stand up landing and have you do some turns and stuff to build your confidence in the equipment.

Last weekend after my jump I realized that even though I jumped with an instructor I'd never jumped with before everything went fine. It wasn't like I was looking to this guy for the nod on every little part of the jump. I just knew that I had my equipment and was ready to fly.

Looking back I realize that I climbed out of the plane, went from the step to hanging on the wing strut then let go just like that was something completely normal to do. I said to myself: of course you'd climb out and drop off the plane. ;)
