MikeJD 0 #1 June 12, 2009 Within a week of moving to London over 20 years ago, I happened to sit opposite The Housemartins on the tube. Probably little remembered (if known at all outside the UK), their lineup included Paul Heaton (later of The Beautiful South) and Norman Cook (who would become Fatboy Slim). I thought hey, this is great! Famous people wherever you look! Since then either I've been walking round with my eyes shut, or that first impression of a celebrity on every corner was sadly wrong. All I can offer is: the inventor Clive Sinclair, who I passed once on Regent Street; Dustin Hoffman, who I saw being filmed a couple of years ago by the Thames for his movie 'Last Chance Harvey'; and the film director (of the second and third Bourne movies) Paul Greengrass, who I walked past the other day in the West End. So I was wondering - who's had a random encounter with a celebrity lately, and where? I don't think people coming to do tandem jumps count. These have to be chance sightings. skymama 37 #2 June 12, 2009 This is as close as I get; while I was at the dz in DeLand last weekend, I saw John Travolta's plane come in to fetch him. Apparently he had been hanging out at the FBO waiting for it. Had I known, I would have found a reason to go over there! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

MikeJD 0 #4 June 12, 2009 QuoteI saw John Travolta's plane come in to fetch him. Not bad! You've just reminded me of another one - David Soul turned up at my local DZ a few years ago. I think I'm allowed to count him since he wasn't there to skydive. He was just waiting for his helicopter.

Are we allowed to know the context, or would that be a breach of confidence?

wmw999 2,517 #15 June 12, 2009 Quote I saw John Travolta's plane come in to fetch him I saw him at a local restaurant in Houston as he was leaving. Apparently he fell in love with this restaurant when he was filming Urban Cowboy, and would fly in for dinner every now and then. He was in a group of 4-6 walking him out to his car very quickly. The manager wouldn't confirm who it was, but said that they respect the right of their patrons to privacy. Saw Lucille Ball in LAX back around 1963... First time I remember recognizing someone like that. At that age, one's world is pretty small, and the only other celebrities I might have recognized would be Captain Kangaroo and Bozo the Clown Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
SARLDO 0 #16 June 12, 2009 3 yrs in SOCAL - nothing. Two days after moving onto Whidbey Island, WA, find myself talking to Danny Devito on the street in the tiny little town of Coupville. While attached to a squadron that delivers "things" to ships at sea, ran into all sorts of people trying to get their names out there as supporters of our troops. Some were legit, others really didn't want to be there but were obviously just there for the PR. Hung out with David Keith for a week in Bahrain while he was pushing the movie Behind Enemy Lines, nice guy. Met Jessica Simpson, her dad and Nick Lechey. Guys were cool, she was... well, lets just say she didn't want to be there. Too many other to mention."Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest" ~Samuel Clemens MB#4300 Dudeist Skydiver #

These have to be chance sightings. Golly, over the years: Jeb and George Bush when Jeb was governor and George was starting his presidential campaign. Nancy Pelosi at a Memorial Day observance. Pat Robertson, on the Capital steps in 1987. Col. David Hackworth, when he was hawking his first book, About Face. Joe Galloway, co-author We Were Soldiers Once and Young. Chuck Yeager, Patty Wagstaff, Bob Hoover, et. al. at the Sun 'n Fun Air Show. R.C Gorman, Dennis Hopper, Jerry Jeff Walker, Michael Murphy, and Robert Taylor, Elizabeth's brother, when I lived in Taos, NM. Also during that time I spent some time with the legendary Jim Arender, D 13. He was famous to me. Sri Darwin Gross, the Eck Master at the time. Johnny Vandermeer, Cincinnati Reds pitcher who pitched two consecutive no hit no run games. That's not random, I knew him all my life. My dad played with the Reds also.Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them. raftman 12 #19 June 12, 2009 I saw Willie Nelson eating breakfast in a restaurant across the street from Cowboy sadium before a game one time. I asked him if he was going to the game. He said "Yeah, Go Cowboys!" So I told him "Go cowboys, see ya at the game Willie". My brothers bimbo girlfriend asked me if I knew that guy. I told her "Yeah that was Willie Nelson, everybody knows Willie". She said she wanted to go back and get his autograph, I told her to leave that man alone, he's eating breakfast. He must not have gotten much sleep the night before, his eyes looked kinda tired.
gravitysurfer 0 #20 June 12, 2009 George Bush Sr. motorcade after work on my way to the DZ in Michigan (1992). Later we had to delay our jump-run because Air Force One and all it's support aircraft were departing GRR 30 miles away. Jorge Garcia (ABC's LOST). I used to pass this guy on the road or spot him all over Haleiwa, Oahu. They were filming the first season (mostly beach scenes) just down the road from our house. I was just out there last weekend and it looks like the "crashed" fuselage prop is still sitting behind Dillingham Airfield. aloha.
24fps 1 #21 June 12, 2009 I was walking back to the house after a party at 99' Sundance Film Festival when Michael Stipe from R.E.M steps out of the shadows and says hi. We talked for a bit and he asked if I was going to see the next film playing at the Egyptian Theater (we were standing in front of it). I had an early morning the next day working at the festival so I had to take off. He was really cool and laid back. John Larroquette would come into the Starbucks I worked at in Boise every now and then. I also met one of the founders of the MS 18 gang while in El Salvador at a church. He's no longer gang bangin'. I think he was more infamous than famous. There are others but they were not to random. They were working on the same films as I was. something funny and unique
