Long distance walk - Offa's Dyke

Recommended Posts

I'm due to be 'between jobs' at the end of next week, so to fill some time (and get fit for summer) I've planed to do the Offa's Dyke long distance walk (177 miles) over 15 days, with our youngest dogB| - clicky

The walk (on the English/Welsh boarder) follows the path of one of the oldest earth work barriers and it stretches from Cheptow (southern end) up to Prestatyn (north Welsh coast).

So, this weekend we're going to the English Peak district to do some training. I've packed my rucsack with everything that I think that we'll need and so how I manage it over the next couple of days. I've already cut down on as much 'stuff' as I think that I can, but I'll see if I can loose some more. A lot of the weight is taken up by water and Dog food!! (should make her carry it!!).

I'll post pictures and details when I can.

It goes through some really pretty countryside and passes very close to my folks home (passes through west Shropshire).

Should be fun ... I hope the dog enjoys it!! Otherwise I'll have to get my dad to come and pick her upo and take her home to sleep it off!!

It should be an average walk of +- 19km a day. What kind of dog is he/she? I've done a mountain hiking trail of 30km the first day with a Ridgeback and we STILL had to play fetch afterwards!

The exhiliration we feel when getting out & about is nothing compared to the joy our furry friends sometimes experience. Sounds like a great bonding experience & lots of fun.
A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

That's one hell of a walk there...
Not something for me though.... I'd be bored out of my mind after a day, this instant gratification thing and limited attention span you know :P

Cheers Jewels .... I've been busy today planning my menu ... I'm hopeing to get fit and loose weight on the trip and reckon on expending around 3200cals/day from the walking (on top of a basal 1000ish). So I'm planning to consume around 3200 a day, unless I don't feel well on that after a few days.
I also need to carry 4 or 5 days supply (mine and the dogs[:/]) so will have to eat high calorie dense food and a lot of water..... It sounds tougher now that I've written it downB|.

Still ..... it'll be fun, I'm sure.

Going well thanks.

I have my kit sorted out. It all fits into my rucsack and doesn't weigh too much. My route, stop overs and camps are sorted and today my menu has taken shape.

I have one more training hike, with an overnight stop, to see if the dog likes camping in a small tent:P

Then the hike its self starts next thursday.
