ChileRelleno 0 #7 May 17, 2009 Ahhhhhh, a story for the bleeding hearts of the world. Geese are pests, they are over populated, they destroy public/private property and shit everywhere. I would've been eating roast goose and fattening up those goslings for a few weeks... Roast gosling, yummy. I'm dead serious, not joking in the least bit. When I lived in Schaumburg, IL, these rats-with-wings shit on every horizontal surface. Motorola had to hire a contractor to hose down all their parking lots because of all the crap getting tracked into the buildings. I had to install fenders on my bikes to deflect the crap. And then in the spring when there were young around, you had to deal with the dumb things attacking you for no good reason."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. TrophyHusband 0 #12 May 17, 2009 canada geese are very yummy. i like to make stew out of them. they are also a big problem. they shit all over and when you move them, they fly right back. some of them aren't even migrating any more, they're just staying in city parks year round. Nataly 38 #13 May 17, 2009 Yeah, they're kind of a pain since they're protected animals.. Driving over to my parents, there is an amazing property that looks like it's worth an absolute fortune.. Lots of land, a pond, beautiful house, etc.. The current owners bought the land and built *everything*.. They apparently went to a lot of trouble to get some Canadian Geese so that their pond/land would really stand out as a feature.. It looked really great and the geese were a real novelty for a while.. Until they started multiplying and now they're a complete pest and the guy can't get rid of them!! I kind of feel sorry for the guy, but he did bring it on himself by getting birds he would never be allowed to shoot!!! TrophyHusband 0 #14 May 17, 2009 are they illegal to shoot period or can't he shoot them because of their location? the problem on this side of the pond is they make their homes in the cities where you can't shoot them. they are in season in the fall/winter here. they should just open up the season year round and get rid of bag limits. there aren't enough hunters with enough time on their hands to put a dent in the population. Nataly 38 #15 May 17, 2009 Huh!! I just looked it up, because I was pretty sure they were protected and couldn't be hunted anywhere.. But it looks like some of those restrictions have recently been lifted in recognition that they have become a pest in some areas. I kind of feel sorry for the guy, but he did bring it on himself by getting birds he would never be allowed to shoot!!! When I was in IL, the popular control technique was to put a pair of swans in a pond to drive out the geese. As I understand it, swans are quite valuable, so that brought a new problem: swan-napping.Since then I have heard of another technique: Border collies that herd the geese back in the pond every time they try to come out. e.g. http://www.hardeybordercollies.com/id2.html"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
