Slow Learner or not

Recommended Posts

If it takes a person over a month to learn how to input numbers into a report (and still requiring assistance) do you feel this person is a slow learner.

It depends on the program and the type of report. But after a few weeks she should know it. If not, I'd say find someone else who can do the job.

It's an excell spreadsheet that requires data entry and basic math for inventory.

Person does not work with/for me... I'm just always in awe at how passive/supportive/complimentary said persons' boss is.

If I were the boss, said person would have been written up every year for the past 3 years for poor performance.

So... I'm trying to guage whether I'm too much of a hard ass, or if the other boss is too much of a softie.

It's a strategy; Nobody likes doing those boring TPS reports, so if you do them badly, they will give you something else, (more interesting), to do.

My father once told me: Never be good at a task nobody likes. You will be the only one assigned that task and you will never move on because nobody else wants to do that task.

I didn't vote, but would have picked "depends"...

I would consider myself to be a very quick learner overall, HOWEVER, when I get frustrated it can take me a *LONG* time to pick something up..

I feel empathy for this new worker who is struggling with excel.. When I moved into my first finance role, I had never used excel before & believe me I felt really stupid for not *getting* it... I too couldn't figure out the most basic reports and I'm sure lots of people who kept explaining it to me thought I was a fucking moron..

After I *finally* got my head around it, I picked it up really fast. I'm the person everyone comes to now with excel questions!!

Just goes to show.. She might be a slow learner.. It might be poor training.. There might be other issues at play.. Or maybe like me it's an isolated "glitch" (possibly combined with frustration)..

I hope it works out - would it be out of line for you to speak to her about it?

Maybe it's a confidence thing rather than a learning problem. If it's her responsibility to make sure the report is correct, it could be that she needs the reassurance of someone looking over her shoulder rather than that she doesn't understand how to do it.

If whoever is helping her were to be 'unavailable' a couple of times, she might suddenly discover that she can do it after all and that would break the cycle.

I think the most important question is: Do you want to do what this person is doing... and if you don't then why are you complaining about how it's being done?

There are pleanty of things I don't enjoy doing and as such they are often the things that take the longest to complete.

basic data entry? Yeah, slow and/or lazy, especially given the fact that her boss does not seem to mind. I see a lot of that where I work and I really don't have the time or patience to deal with it. Bosses play favorites for no apparent reason sometimes, and other times the reason is all too obvious.

WOW so many things I want to respond to....

a) She has worked for the company for 15 years.

b) It's normally a report her supervisor handles, however he is on vacation in Australia for a month.

c) Her supervisor sat with her for a month before leaving on vacation to teach her how to input the numbers (yes sitting alongside coaching her the whole month) - same questions, same answers for over a month.

d) Don't feel it's a lazy, or unmotivated thing... she stayed here until 7:30 pm last night trying to figure it out after our HQ office in Norway complained that the numbers were incorrect.

e) I wouldn't mind doing the report, and actually wish that her supervisor would have cross trained me so that we would not have this situation. I don't even mind helping her out with her other tasks while we are short staffed.

I've worked with this person before, and was incredibly frustrated (at the time) with the amount of time it takes her to learn and complete tasks. Her supervisor doesn't seem to feel that there is a problem.

I'm baffled! :S

I have a much different relationship with her now vs when I worked with her. I feel kinda bad for her - she was so stressed out yesterday b/c our HQ complained, she refused to go home until she felt she got the report right - she was afraid she was going to have nightmares about it.

This morning I tried to give her an anology that would help her relate to the spreadsheet. It seemed to make more sense to her... she just seems to get lost in a few of the variables.

Based on that, I would say slow and/or not really comfortable with computers. I am guessing a little bit older (over 40) because some of us had to learn our basic computer skills as they were introduced on the job and not in school. And maybe her boss is OK with it because she has other skills that he or she really values?
