Family Heirlooms

Recommended Posts

skymama's post about her dining room set made me post this.

I was lucky enough to get a family heirloom yesterday.

My dad was cleaning out a drawer in his bedroom that had a bunch of old empty pill bottles, and some with drugs in them that I said I would take to the Pharmacy for disposal.

I pulled the drawer out and took out on the deck for him to go through. About an hour later he called me out.

He found a small blue jewellery box and said I might like to keep what was in it.

I opened it up and wrapped in kleenex, were my mom's engagement and anniversary rings, along with his and her's wedding bands.

My mom passed away almost 24 years ago.

I have the cross her gave her on their wedding day in 1958. And now I have the rings too.

Pretty cool heirloom.

:)
Oh, and the table underneath my hand was my grandmothers dining room table that was built by the Strathcona Furniture Company in 1912 ... at least that's what the label says.

Heirlooms are neat. :)

Oh, that's an awesome find! :)
I also got my grandma's cookie jar. It's nothing fancy, it was just always in her kitchen for as long as I can remember.

Something else I snagged was her fur stole. I know, it's wrong to kill animals so you can wear their fur, but this one was dead before I was born. It has her initials stitched into the lining, that's the main reason I wanted it.

She has slowly given away rings as her arthritis made it too hard to wear them. I got one of those a few years ago too.

My other cousins complain that I'm her favorite. :)

My wife's diamond wedding ring is a family heirloom that was passed down from my great great aunt, who had it made about 80 years ago. It's a beauty and a specific cut you don't see anymore. I'll post it when I get a chance.
