wrinkled main chute

Recommended Posts

I just purchased the rig and was having the reserve re-packed and the main inspected. When it came out of the bag it looked like it had been just stuffed in and stored badly. While in great condition, it's just really wrinkled. Does this really matter ?
Ordinary's..... just not good enough today.

My canopy gets wrinkles too. It likes to be jumped, and when sitting around for a while, it gets upset and gets wrinkles... After a jump, they seem to go away until the next time it gets left for a few days... ;-)

If you can't jump it, just lay it out all flat on one side. You can leave it like this, or fold it up a bit for storage. Leaving it like this for a while takes out a lot of the wrinkles. If you're particular about wrinkles and don't want to leave the canopy packed for whatever reason, you can store it like this regularly.

This is funny. But in seriousness, the wrinkles will have no affect on flight characteristics when suspened and loaded. Like all have said, they will go away. Wait until your main has 700 or more jumps on it and it is unable to get and hold wrinkles anymore...then you'll miss the crispness that you have now ;)

wrinkles aren't going to affect your canopy. it may have gotten moist/wet on a previous jump, though.
while that wouldn't ruin your canopy it just makes it look like the back of your balls:o:o.

Inspect it well for slight tears, loose threading etc (that wouldnt be caused by moisture) if you feell it was neglected.

onvce you or your rigger are satisfied with its condition, jump it.

it'll straighten itself out while your flying it;)
when you look up you can enjoy the creaseless main;)

How about iron it? ;););););)

Actually...you can iron the fabric on a low setting. This has sometimes been used by riggers to flatten scrap of fabric that have been stored for a while.

i'm glad i opened this thread :)ironing popped into my head as well ... but someone beat me to it (heheh)
seriously though... if it bugs ya, put it in the bag so you don't have to look at it.

crazydiver,
my lowest setting doesn't give off enough heat to get wrinkles out... my suits & silk go strait to the cleaner. but why would you ever want to iron it?
i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay. .:need a container to fit 5'4", 110 lb. cypres ready & able to fit a 170 main (or slightly smaller):.[/ce

i almost manifested and went up before looking at it luckily i had a peek and the cells were really stuck together.....i took it outside and flew it like a kite...but it still took about half and hour ov peeling to get it inflated....it def wouldnt have opened...

Kiting a canopy in 10 mph winds is a lot different than opening at 120mph in free fall. I know of a reserve that had been packed for nearly two years and when it came time to use it, it opened beautifully. Not mine of course because that's against regs ;) I believe it's more a function of where you stored it than how long. Being in a hot trunk all summer would be bad. ZP gets sticky in the heat. All that being said, it's against the regs for a reserve or a MAIN to be packed more than 120 days without a repack.

Wrinkles are not bad. All new and some older canopys will have wrinkles. Like everyone has said, jump it!

If you could pull the parachute apart by your hands...then I think a 120 mph wind could pull the canopy apart. And if the nylon WAS stuck together...it may have been damaged and shouldn't have been jumped even if you did fly it like a kite for some reason.
