So,does that mean I can eat it?:D
They only flower once, now does the flower stay,or does it die off and then I'm left with just the leaves??

:D:D:DWell usually that is the case for me too! That's kinda why I was wondering.Looks a bit like the plant from Little Shop of Horrors.Thought I'd might have to feed it the neighbors kids;)
Only half kidding on that one;)

It will stay in bloom for quite a long time, but once that dies off you're left with just the leaves. I would assume most don't last as house plants very long after that!

Edit to add: Many of them are edible, so its probably not the best choice to take care of a kid problem. :P

I'll agree with kittikat that it looks like a type of bromeliad - probably a guzmania, but I don't know exactly which species. They sort of look like a lily, but it's a different type of plant.

Here's a nice article on bromeliads:

If you scroll about half-way down the page, you'll see the guzmanias.

Some kind of bromeliad - related to pineapple.

They are really nice but unfortunately only flower once.

BUT.... they will send up small "pups" around the older plant. Those will grow and bloom eventually. I still have some growing that I got from my Uncles yard in Maitland FL in 1976... same plants..and they have had hundreds of pups.
