Brother scored a job near Mojave, CA ...where to live?

Recommended Posts

So after graduating in December of '08, my brother finally scored a job working near edwards airforce base in Southern Cali.

Looking at the map looks like his options will be kind of limited. I see Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita and some smaller cities for potential living areas. Anyone live close by that can offer suggestions? He is putting his motorcycle in the back of his truck with a suitcase and driving west (from florida).

I'm thinking about going down in two weeks when he drives out to help him look for a place to stay, but I don't know a damn thing about that area.

I am from Lancaster. Even though it is Cali, it sucks, including Palmdale.

I think the closest town is Rosenburg, or Roseburg (can't remember).

But there is absoluty nothing out there. My suggestion would be Lancaster. But most of it is a crime ridden Hell hole. Tell him to stay on base.

I fucking hate that area! Sorry to be negative, but he will see what I am talking about when he gets there.

Las Vegas is only 4 1/2 hours away though. L.A. is about 2 hours from Edwards.

Good luck to him!

What are his interests? My parents still live out there and they are very into going out and shooting guns and racing cars. PM me if he wants to know.

Santa Clarita/Canyon Country is very nice. I'm 30 minutes South of there. It would not be a bad commute. There wouldn't be much traffic.

I agree with goofyjumper, Palmdale/Lancaster and the surrounding area sucks.

Cal City
Tehachapi

Best of luck to your bro.

Tehachapi is a cool place. Cal City is not.

Also, to the original poster... the winters/summers are extreme in that area. Not like some other states, but for California.

Ditto on the Santa Clarita....I used to have a friend who lived there and it seemed livable... but that was 10 years ago... if he does get a place... get an apartment that faces to the north.... it will keep the AC bills lower than one facing west or to the south.

Yes, and housing is pretty reasonable.

but, if you're going to go 60 miles out, you also have Bakersfiled, and Ridgecrest. Personally if I went that far, I'd find a place off the 178 - gorgeous hills between Ridgcrest/Bakersfield & Lake Isabella.

Just noticed he mentioned a bike (probably a road bike i/o dirt), but Cal City is HUGE for the bikers.

Oh and whatever you do please be certain to tell your brother to stay away from hwy 138 (as far as placed to live).

Hi, I also live in Lancaster. The cities/ towns that are near Mojave are Rosamond, Lancaster, and Palmdale. The comunities are basicaly "bedroom" comunities for people who work in LA but can not afford the LA housing costs. You have a regional mall , schools etc.. frankly its not a bad place to live. For nightclub type entertainment you have to go to LA. (about 1 hour from Lancaster) I can make it in 45 min but thats another story:ph34r:
