bluepill 0 #1 April 27, 2009 Tmrw night I'm going to the a poker night organized by work. It is Texas hold em no limit. We pay a fee and at the end of the night the winner gets a trophy. Anyhow, I've never played before and I don't want to go out in the first round. Has anyone got some simple strategies to stear me clear of trouble? Someone already said "always throw away 2 and 7 different suits" BP
 Squeak 17 #2 April 27, 2009 fold every hand unless you have ACe Face or a decent pairThen you will ake it past the 1st round no problems You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! BP
 doug925 0 #4 April 27, 2009 Stay away from medium pairs! Play really tight! You still might get busted, but try to only play AK,AA, or KK to start with. (that means you won't play a lot of hands) If the pot is not raised pre flop then you can limp in with all pairs hoping to hit the set (3 of a kind) Doug.I have never developed indigestion from eating my words. It is very simple and will totally piss off any reasonably good player at the table because it completely takes away their chance of out playing you... Only Play the Following hands: AA AK AQ KK QQ JJ AJ - SUITED. AT - SUITED. Fold all Other hands. You one and only move is ALL-IN everytime you get one of these hands. Dolye Brunson developed this strategy (If you can call it that) for his neice who had never played Hold-em before in her life and wanted to play in the WSOP. She made it till the third day of the tournament and cashed. And won't that just scare em off each time? Or do I low bet until the pot grows and then go all in? BP
 bluepill 0 #8 April 27, 2009 Well it was supposed to be a "bit of fun" non serious event. So I thought it would be a load of complete novices. But after a familiarization lunch session today run by the organizer, I realized that not only am I the least experienced of the lot, but some of the guys play every day and are taking it very serious. I don't mind losing, I just don't want to look like a complete cock doing it.BP
 Thanatos340 1 #9 April 28, 2009 All IN soon as it is your turn to act. This will annoy the hell out of good players. It is the only move you make. And ONLY with the hands mentioned. Do NOT bet low and try to move on the flop. Better players will usually out play you on the flop. The idea is to take away that opportunity. Yes they will all fold the first couple times you do this. Dont worry, They will soon get tired of this and call you. When they do, You have a solid hand and a chance of winning. Edit: If anyone give you shit about this strategy, Just tell them it is exactly the strategy that Dole Brunson recommended for a player of your caliber!!You probably will not win with it, But you will have some fun and most likely finish respectfully. The only issue with that is there is not a large field of players like WSOP and in a smaller "tournament" the clock and blinds could eat him up before he ever even saw one of those hands. While sound advice and if you're catching those cards, play it that way, but anyone who tells you they haven't mucked cards for three hours grinding for those pre-flop hands... I'm going to add the following for a smaller field with a 4-6 hour game play time: 1. Any pocket pair - If the pre-flop bet is no more than 3X the large blind; Call. If you hit trips on the flop, then go all in. Otherwise - fold. 2. Suited Connectors - Only call pre-flop if its a large blind call and then evaluate the flop for flushes and straights. Don't pay anymore than 3X the big blind to see the turn. If you haven't found it on the turn - get out. 3. If you're not throwing away winning hands, you're playing too much. Don't let the fact that you threw away a winner on the previous hand let you be reckless on the next hand. You'll dig your own grave. 4. Observe, enjoy, have fun.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
