Hausse 0 #52 April 21, 2009 I borrow my rig to random people every now and then so sure my SO could have it too.
Pinna 0 #53 April 21, 2009 Quote Quote It used to be about the most common phrase in the Parchutist Incidents section back in the day: "Deceased was using borrowed gear" 30 years ago was a period of gear transition. A lot of different rigs with handles in all kinds of places, all kinds of deployment and cutaway systems. Today rigs are pretty standardized in their handle placement and usage. Not as big of a deal anymore.I'm not downplaying the risk, just saying it's much more manageable. There's a lot a phrases you don't see much anymore. One thing you used to never see: "Deceased's parachute appeared fully opened and functioning, but died because of a turn made close to the ground." I agree completely. I started jumping in 82, and the borrowed gear phrase almost had a black humor element of its own sort of on par with "BSBD". The borrowed gear line was one I was very happy to see almost vanish! It's unfortunate that new ones have taken its place.
SSHusky 0 #54 April 21, 2009 I let my man borrow my rig... If possible I try to avoid it if I packed the last pack job. I like my openings very quick, but he doesn't seem to appreciate the back breaking openings so much.

Beth's rig is a little tighter on me then mine but since I did close to 500 jumps on the canopy in her rig it's a safe bet I know the flight characteristics. And we both jump Mirage Containers with Vigil II AAD's so the differences in the functionality are minimal.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... noname 0 #56 April 22, 2009 Last time I borrowed my husband's canopy I cut it away and he got to watch it drift over the freeway. He still talks about how I cut *his* canopy away.
airtwardo 7 #57 April 22, 2009 Quote John, why do you like the pullout vs throwout ? He probably does for the same reason a lotta 'old-timers' do...it eliminates one possible deployment problem, pilot-chute in tow. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
mamajumps 0 #58 April 22, 2009 I have loaned my rig out to select people that I knew and have been offered a rig to borrow from people I know... (which I never accepted)... to me, something like a rig, that is the thread between life and death is a very personal thing and should not be loaned out. I am with Cocheese on this one.... EXTremeWade 0 #59 April 22, 2009 Quote Don't borrow gear. Don't loan yours out. Keep it simple sweetie. Best advice yet!
billvon 3,068 #60 April 22, 2009 >would you let your SO borrow it? Of course. Heck, one of Amy's rigs is my old Talon (well, not old) that never fit me and so we resized it. We swap canopies all the time. We have an old Safire1 119 that gets swapped back and forth a lot. She jumps my Crossfire 109 occasionally but it's still a bit fast for her. chaoskitty 0 #61 April 22, 2009 My own personal rule is that I don't borrow something that I can't afford to replace. Likewise, I dont lend my things out to people who aren't going to take responsibility for them. So, one of my friends has my rig to jump this weekend. If anything happens to it, I know he'll take care of it. But my brother doesn't understand why I never let him borrow my truck.

I borrow gear from time to time. I also jump rigs off the student/rental rack occasionally. My first wingsuit jump had to be borrowed gear because of my pullout. As long as the handles all work the same as my own gear and I get a chance to preflight it, I'm fine with that. I also trust most people to pack about as well as I do. jumpwally 0 #63 April 22, 2009 Hey ,im an old timer too ! I just never bought into that analogy,,,ive seen some ugly things happen with pullouts that just made me uneasy,,don't really know why,,felt safer with a throwout........... smile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
