Referring to the boy who jumped off a roof with a plastic bag parachute thread..

Yeah, joking about it isn't right, but is that a 'normal' (whatever THAT means) response or are we as a more risk-accepting community just blasé (and as such less emotional')'about something like this?

Do skydivers joke about death more readily than the average Joe?

Naaahhhh..... Try hanging out with some hospital folks for a while.... Specially ER, ICU and Anesthesia folks.... They are way "worse" than skydivers when it comes to joking about death.

Agreed. Same with EMS folks. When you're around that much death you have to distance yourself somehow or you'd lose your mind. I've seen a couple people who weren't able to cope with it well and it wasn't easy to watch them in their self-destructive state. I think humor is the most common and easiest way of dealing with it.

Exactly....

If you don't let it out in some form it's going to eat you alive inside out.
I can see how many people find this joking very offensive, especially if they who hear the joke is on the other end (lost someone cloce etc). But it's basically just a way to survive and get past all the shit that you have to deal with.

I'm one of the folks that almost never is confronted with horrible stuff. And yes, I'm very thankful for that.
Sooner or later I know I'm going to lose frinds in this sport, but I'll deal with it then and there.

[Edit to add] So you have gotten rid of most of the bottled up "naughtyness" now and are up for some serious discussions as well :PB|:D

Despite all the naughtiness there is still a serious side to me. :)

I just couldn’t resist that whim :P

Its funny that yesterday morning we lost one of our "regulars" in my reponse area (and came home to this thread). We call it "woke up dead". You get to know some of these people and really care for them and you do what you need to do, the humorous banter kicks in and you move on to the next one. It does relieve a lot of the stress but it really must be controlled (hard to do some times;)). Some of the hospitals have family hanging out right near the ambulance bays and that gets pretty bad sometimes. from my experience its usually (but not always) the youngsters laughing and carrying on not paying attention. As far as the skydiving thing, I dont make jokes about death so much, dont want to infringe on YOUR juju. I have a kind of unique situation sometimes, I work overtime shifts in Taft where I hear the crews commenting on dz calls, but they watch what they say if they know I know some of these folks (not often, but its happened).

OK, so at least I'm not weird (OK, not THAT weird). It all boils down to being desensityzed(?) to some degree and accepting the fact that we've all got a ticket for this ride, and when it's your stop, it's your stop.

Life goes on and it's OK to be OK with that and break the 'tension.'

Is that kinda almost to some degree what we're all talking about here?
