How in the H*LL Do You Sleep With Bruised Ribs?!?

Recommended Posts

I know with this group somebody MUST have some kind of experience with this...

I got in ANOTHER freaking car accident on March 11th. Got rear-ended in my lil' Escort by an F250. That freaking hurt.

I didn't think it was that bad...no ambulance, but my car is totalled. Then about a week later, I'm in so much pain I'm just going out of my mind.

3 problems: neck (I was stopped at a light looking down at my hands and >WHAM< the dude hits me). The headrest slammed into my head, back and ribs slammed into the seat, etc...

The right side of my pelvis was knocked out of alignment. Sacrum (sp??) was tilted, thoracic was torqued, and my neck is a real fucking mess...:(

So WHAT POSITION can I freaking sleep in that won't kill my ribs?!?!? I lie flat on my back with a roll under my neck and my neck is ok...legs elevated a bit and my pelvis doesn't hurt, but then my ribs are just aching.

Dammit I am such a baby with chronic pain...:(

I can't lay on my stomach because it kills my neck...? [:/]

A co-worker had some cracked ribs just recently. She was having a hard time with the pain also. Her Dr had her wrap her rap her rib cage, but not sure if that helped with her sleeping or not. I can ask her tomorrow if there is anything she did specifically to ease the pain besides the meds.

From what she described to me....I can imagine it can be pretty painful [:/] Hope you get to feeling better!

A lot of Percocet ;)

that, and wash it down with st. michelle gewurztraminer, or if you prefer red, menage a trios. (the wine, not the sex).

That's a pretty sweet wine...I like them sweet. I had half a bottle left of that here in my fridge up until about a week ago.

I am trying REALLY REALLY hard to stay off of the Rx meds...i am taking Skelaxin (muscle relaxer) and trying to NOT ask for any Vicodin. I've been managing w/Extra strength Tylenol about once per day.

I'm also using a T.E.N.S machine that I bought a few years ago...and Tiger Balm/Icy-Hot patches.

I'm seeing a chiropractor, a physical therapist, and I'll get a massage today (yea!).

Sounds like overkill I know, but I just cannot get to a point where I am without pain. The daily headaches are horrid.

I haven't had any alcohol at all for a couple of months (everyone else around here drank the wine)...I am really trying to not allow myself to get to a point where I am 'needing' meds and alcohol, because given my history, it's a potential danger.

A body pillow works great. :)
Sorry to hear you got hurt and I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Think I'll go to Wally World today and pick one up...that's a beauty idea. B|

Have Jello J make fun of you, it works pretty good - then jump on a flight to go home and have to carry luggage on . . . that works good too - then have Divot make fun of you - that is the best pain reliever ever . . .

for about 6 months my right shoulder hurt me when i slept on it. because i'm fat i can only sleep on my sides and spent my nights shifting from one side to the other in my sleep. several times a night i would wake up in seering pain. i stayed away from the alcohol and good drugs out of fear of addiction. but that combo is great if you only have to do it once in a while. the only thing i can suggest in all seriousness is lots of soft pillows and just try to get as comfortable as you can. also when i have pain from an injury, my wife makes my take 800mg motrin on a schedule whether i'm hurting at the moment or not. she says that if i stay ahead of the pain with otc stuff, i won't need the prescription stuff. it usually works, but its not as fun.

your post reminds me that i need to schedule a massage as a surprise for my wife.

I'm not sure about wrapping...'bruised' is the best way that I can describe the pain, but technically, the muscles between each rib are spasming and locked up. It feels like I picked a fight with an MMA guy. :( That's why I have submitted to taking the muscle relaxer...because otherwise, nothing will release these spasming muscles around my ribs and neck. X-Rays show 3 of my cervical vertebrae won't move at all because the muscles won't release. It's weird.

I've been icing...and heating...maybe wrapping might let the muscles chill out? Because they'll feel supported? I'll ask PT today...

I just saw intervention last night...if you cant get any sleep you could always try oxycontin. Sure you might become a crackhead later and steal your moms wedding ring but I bet you wont have any problems falling asleep. Of course I dont do that stuff I just watched the video of this chick passed out like 5 minutes after she took one.

Back in 2001, It was the first day of skiing at Keystone, and I hit a piece of wood in the snow, stopping my skis dead in their track, popping the bindings, and sending me flying into the trees

Since I was not wearing a helmet, I wrapped my arms around my head and skillfully used my ribcage to absorb the impact with the fallen log.:S

I went to the Dr and had it X-rayed. They didn't see anything but told me cracks don't always show up on a single X-ray, but it didn't really matter because they couldn't do anything but let it heal anyway.

Man that sucked. It felt like my ribcage wasn't even symmetrical, and breathing hurt for several weeks. And of course this all happened just before I had to move from the South side of town to the North side.>:(

The body pillow was my best friend for awhile.

Try it and see how it works for you. :)

Can you try sleeping in a recliner for a few days? It might relieve some of the pressure on your ribs. You won't sleep as well as in a bed, but it's way better than not sleeping at all.

I had a noticeable whiplash about 20 years ago. After 4-5 years it still would hurt regularly, what felt like the nerve, all the way down my back. I started doing gentle neck exercises EVERY DAY. Didn't do much in the beginning, but now I can't remember when anything last hurt. When I quit for a couple of years early on, I started hurting again, and then stopped hurting when I started the exercises again. So I at least am convinced that there's a relationship.

I see ALOT of people after car wrecks. There are a couple of things to do. If the ribs are bothering you could look at getting a rib belt or wrap yourself with an ace wrap. Just make sure you are coughing and deep breathing frequently. Ribs will take about 6 weeks to heal -- some people have the pain a lot longer. As for the neck...if you can tolerate anti-inflammatories, make sure that you take them consistently, ice 4 x a day for 20 minutes, you may alternate with heat. I would also talk to your doc about a referral for physical therapy --- I am more of a PT advocate than a chiro advocate --just my preference. Remember soft tissue actually takes quite a while to heal .... longer than some fractures. If you are still having problems it is key to keep going back to your primary care provider so that there is a consistent record of your progress or lack there of. It is hard when people come in and have hit different ERs, or providers --- you can't really get a handle of how the injury has been managed sometimes.
Keep hanging in there Jaye - sorry this happened. I am sure that it has slowed you down some.

Thanks for your sage advice, insurance agent, travel specialist. If she has survived for a week with fractured ribs, she will continue to survive. If tyey are bruised, they will hurt for a few weeks,, if broken a few extra weeks. If she needs to document them for her attorney, then by all means, get an xray.
