homer 0 #1 September 16, 2005 My draw string on my Z1 is just about to break on me again and it needs replacing. Does anyone know how I could do it myself or would it be best to send it back to Para-sport and let them do it. CSA #699 Muff #3804
Remster 30 #2 September 16, 2005 Isnt that elastic simply running in a fold of the fabric in the neck line? I would just tie the new one the the end of the old one and pull...Remster
homer 0 #3 September 16, 2005 The elastic has worn out and broken and now the fabric covering the elastic is stretched and breaking. I have already tied it twice. It is now to the point where the draw string lock thing wont hold draw string in place. I'm forced to tie it in a knot after putting helmet on. QuoteIsnt that elastic simply running in a fold of the fabric in the neck line? I would just tie the new one the the end of the old one and pull... The problem is the elastic is too worn out to do that the entire draw string needs to be replaced. To replace it the stitching of the neck liner needs to be pulled and opened up. At the front of the neck the draw string is stitched in place so running a wire through and pulling a new elastic band through wont work. The only way is to remove the stitchings and opening up the neck liner. I don't have the ability to resow the liner once I have replaced the bad. I just don't want to remove the neck liners stitchings if I can't sow it back together. I don't think my rigger can sow it on a machine unless the liner is removed from the helmet. Which would require hot gluing and I haven't had a problem with the liner pulling apart yet unlike a lot of others who have. Back to my question has anyone had to replace there elastic draw band and if so how did they do it. CSA #699 Muff #3804
gemini 0 #4 September 17, 2005 Someone at Spacey replaced hers. When I asked her she just hooked the old past the stitching, pulled out a loop, cut the old, tied a new one she bought at a fabric shop in town to the old one, then pulled out and cut the other end and pulled the whole thing through. She didn't mention anything about cutting stiching or resewing anything. Blue skies, Jim
pilotdave 0 #5 September 17, 2005 Dunno the answer to your question, but I do know ya ruin a Z1 by adjusting the draw string every time you put it on. Set it once, tuck it into the fabric, and forget it. No probs with the glue coming off or the draw string wearing out after ~500 jumps on mine. Haven't adjusted it since the day I bought it, and it works great that way. Dave

gemini 0 #7 September 17, 2005 Ditto. I have 1,200 on mine without problems. First time I put it on I tightened the drawstring, slid the clasp into postion, and then tied the excess drawstring into several knots. Never touched it since. lauras 0 #8 September 17, 2005 I used a fid to thread some shock cord through. Made it a bit long, used the same plastic thingy (which you can find at any sewing shop), burnt the ends et voila. I tighten & untighten mine on every jump because I like to be able to stick my hair in my helmet. No problems. Also, if the liner is coming unglued, I used Shoe Goo with great success - much better than a hot glue gun.
nbblood 0 #9 September 18, 2005 I have changed a couple drawstrings in Z1s using a power tool. I replaced the elastic with closing loop material and it works much better and lasts longer. Just thread it through the loop on the power tool and work it through. It takes 5 minutes.....maybe. Blues, NathanBlues, Nathan If you wait 'til the last minute, it'll only take a minute. skycat 0 #10 September 18, 2005 I replaced mine with the same kind of bungee used to connect legstraps together. Just do a whip stitch to the old elastic and pull it through feed the bungee through the tightener and you will never need to replace it again.Fly it like you stole it! vt1977 0 #11 September 18, 2005 A very clever rigger suggested I replace the elastic with some dacron line when the most recent elastic broke. No problems with that at all, and I can see the dacron lasting as long as the helmet is likely to now which is more than I can say for the damn elastic...
