Recommended Posts

I spent two weeks in Costa Rica last Dec, it was awesome. I went Coast to Coast and had a balst.
Depends on what you want to do? surf, jungle tours, rain forest, cloud forest.. go to book store, look at travel books, don't buy them just sit there and read them! you tube is your friend fr adventuer videos of stuff like zip lines and volcano tours!
Oh don't change your currency, they take dollars everywhere! you will get colones back as well as dollars if you just think you have to exchange cash maybe do 50$ max!
Have fun, be safe.

Well it depends on how you plan on doing really. Since you will be flying into San Jose, you'll either have to go North first and work your way back South towards San jose or vice versa from the South. I recommend the Pacific side. I am pretty sure you could catch a bus from San Jose to say Murcielago which is pretty far North before you're in Nicaragua and you are also pretty deep in the bush once you go north of Liberia.

The coast is beautiful up around murcielago but if you plan on literally walking the coast the whole way you may be disappointed or at least be prepared to bust bush and swim in some parts as the road( interstate 1) doesn't run along the coast like say in California, etc. From murcielago down to say Cacao it's pretty much straight up jungle or jungle dirt roads. And when I say road, I want you to image a 2 way asphalt street that looks like swiss cheese instead of a road. In a majority of the area there is no shoulder just jungle. Usually there is a shoulder once you are close to farms and or towns. Point being, walking on the road or as far to the side of it as possible can be a dangerous thing to do, so always walk against oncoming traffic and don't expect drivers to look out for you or be concerned with your safety.

If you go down South say around the popular surfing areas it may be more along what your looking for and a lot less austere. In either case you can get as lost as you want and not see people for days or you can stay so your always close to some form of civilization. I hope you have a good grasp on the Spanish language as not everyone speaks English, especially in the boonies. Even though crime isn't that big of a deal in CR as it is in other countries, I recommend you pick up a machette once you get there as it will be needed in the bush in some places if your going cross country and in the event you need to defend your self from a2 or 4 legged attacker.

Which brings me to the wildlife. Most of CR is a wild life preserve of some sort and there is plenty of it in the sticks. If you plan on sleeping outdoors, be smart about it as there are some very dangerous animals, many of them small, that can ruin your day and are common in the bush.
