skittles_of_SDC 0 #1 February 1, 2009 More specifically for people who needed to get a plate. Recently I have been feeling the plate because the walking cast rubs on it and it is pretty uncomfortable. When you got out of your walking cast, assuming you had one, and switched over to normal shoes could you still feel the plate rubbing? Also if you could at first, did/do you still feel it rubbing after a few months?

fossg 0 #6 February 1, 2009 For about a year my shin area was kinda sensitive but it cleared up. (my break was also skydiving related) I have jumped on it since and the only long term problem you might experience is a dull ache in cold weather. It could be the break or old age (I'm 51) Good luck to you
Andy9o8 2 #7 February 1, 2009 The screws in my plate do rub if I'm wearing a tight-fitting helmet. On the other hand, I get excellent radio reception.
sunshine 2 #8 February 1, 2009 I have 5 screws and 1 plate in my right ankle. Like Trophyhusband, if i'm wearing boots or anything that is somewhat snug up on the ankle, i totally feel the hardware and it sucks. For me, occasionally i'll be walking normally and my ankle will just kinda 'give out' for no apparent reason. I did go back to my ortho surgeon about a yr after getting the hardware installed. He took xrays and said everything was fine, but when people break the ankle, they are susceptible to arthritis - even at a young age. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! Harris 0 #11 February 2, 2009 I can't feel mine any more. I could at first, but I guess I've gotten used to it or whatever. Doesn't bother me anymore.Take risks not to to escape life, but to prevent life from escaping.
skittles_of_SDC 0 #12 February 2, 2009 Here's mine. It's pretty small and hard to see. Hard to tell from the small image but thats 2 screws in the tib. Much bigger image and easier to see.http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/photo.php?pid=43183998&id=10053331 Thanks for all the responses too. It's good to get some info first hand from people who have experienced it.
Jeffwxyz 0 #13 February 2, 2009 So.... With the plate and screws in there, does it reinforce the bone so that it won't be as likely to break again? Maybe that would be a plus. Has anyone had a break with a plate in? What about pins?
DrewEckhardt 0 #14 February 2, 2009 QuoteSo.... With the plate and screws in there, does it reinforce the bone so that it won't be as likely to break again? Maybe that would be a plus. You want your legs to break in the straight pieces of bone (which usually heal with time and a little help) instead of at the joints where bone spurs will give you arthritis. Moving the weak point away from the part that heals most easily is not a good idea.

tigra 0 #16 February 2, 2009 OK, first of all, you just started weight bearing and that can be pretty painful. You are several months away from even considering removing the hardware and until the ankle is healed a little more completely, you really won't know if it is the hardware that is bothering you or if this is just a normal part of the healing process. BUT----- Yes, 2 years later, I could literally feel the plate catching on my muscle when I walked, especially if I was walking fast or for any kind of distance. When I told my doctor that's what it felt like, I expected him to tell me it was all in my head but he didn't- he said that's exactly what was happening. He scheduled the surgery to remove it without batting an eye. And the relief I felt after it was removed was instant. I had gotten used to being in some pain pretty much all the time- I didn't even realize how much it bothered me until it was gone.
Dumpster 0 #17 February 2, 2009 I've got a plate and 8 screws on the outside of my left ankle, they have been there since November of '04. Was back in the air Safety Day 2005. The initial irritation faded over time but does return once in a while. I do feel the screwheads rubbing when I wear certain shoes, mostly dress shoes. Choice of footwear, and I think I've formed some sort of callous over the area has reduced this. Easy Does It
