chiquita24 0 #1 January 24, 2009 So my sister's husband did something with her ipod and itunes and it deleted all the music except 25 songs! She's pissed. I searched all over her computer to find them and tried doing a system restore (not sure if that would help or not), but I can't find them. How would it delete all songs except the 25 and is there any way to bring them back? I told her I think her music is gone, but thought I'd check here for any advice. porpoishead 8 #2 January 24, 2009 sounds like it may have synchronized to a different library. I lost 60+ gigs of music in a synchronizing issue with apple devices. some fuckstick synchronized my machine to his device and my music disappeared... I don't use I-tunes or I-pods anymore. if you have a lot of music it's a good idea to strip the DRM from it and back it up on an external HD that way if your machine gets wasted you don't have to purchase the music again. murrays 0 #3 January 24, 2009 I think, unfortunately, you should have asked for help before doing a system restore....if it does what I think it does. Is the music (25 songs) still in the iTunes library after the system restore? Have you just done something to only display a few songs? In the column view, is "All" selected in all three panes...Artist Album Song? Does she still have all her music on her iPod? I'm not clear if everything got deleted on the computer and the iPod. If it is on her iPod there are lots of programs that will allow you to transfer the music from the iPod to the computer. I believe there is a way to download all music purchased from the iTunes store again. Backup your stuff! I have an external hard drive with everything on it using Time Machine on my Mac and am also backing up my music and photos using a new service called Back Blaze so that I have an offsite backup. porpoishead 8 #4 January 24, 2009 for clarity... if the I-pod only had 25 songs on it and you synchronize the I-tunes library in the machine to the device then the I-tunes library in the machine will end up with the 25 songs from the I-pod. it will delete the previous library. I've been hearing from the die hard I-tune fans around here that the newer ones can synchronize to more than one library now...I still don't fuck with I-tunes though they can sync my ass... if you want a friend feed any animal Perry Farrell

Without 3rd party software that shouldn't happen. To prevent people transferring music from iPod to another computer this ability has never existed in iTunes. That's the way the record companies like it. When I hook up an iPod to a computer that it isn't linked to...I am asked if I want to erase the iPod and transfer the music from the new computer to the iPod. If something else happened to you I'm baffled as it is the exact opposite of what is supposed to happen. porpoishead 8 #6 January 24, 2009 I actually like the macs a lot, just wouldnt piss on the I-tunes/I-pods if they were on fire... not sure exactly how the synchronization where i lost music went south, it was brought to my attention after I had just come out of the water from a dive and the music was already gone. I did manage to recreate the scenario and it did require me to use other software.... who knows... some fucksticks just click click click click without knowing what the fucks up... kinda like downsizing if you want a friend feed any animal Perry Farrell
murrays 0 #7 January 24, 2009 I've been using iTunes since before there were iPods and have never had anything strange happen to me...we have had 7 different iPods since they came out, I've synced them with my home computer and my work computer and never have lost anything on my computer. But, you know....I think I remember something similar to this happening and it was a case of iTunes losing the location of the library or something like that....some searches in the Apple support groups/website might turn something up. Like this thread where the cause was related to an issue with a Sony Vaio. SO, OP - go and take a look in the Apple support, post a message if you can't find a solution. Best of luck, Murray
Coreece 190 #8 January 24, 2009 Songs saved to the hard drive are more than likely still there. As Murrays said, its generally just the information on the I-pod that is most commonly deleted, not the songs on the hard drive. The default location of I-tunes purchased music is in the following path: C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music The files should still be here if nobody set a specific location. If they are not here, you'll need to do a more diligent search. If you are positive that you cannot find the files and that they have been deleted somehow...there is still hope. When a file is deleted in Windows, the information of that file is not erased. Windows just disregards that file and pretends it doesn't exist eventhough that file is still there. Windows just doesn't allow you to see it.(the same goes for Mac too.) The problem is when you decide to save a NEW file to the hard drive. For example...If I were to delete a photo, the photo information is still there...but if I were to save a NEW photo, windows would write the information of that new photo over the information of the old photo. The more the old photo is overwritten the less likely it is that it will be able to be read. Just like crossing out a mistake in a sentence with a pencil. So, if you are sure that the files are deleted, you'll need to buy some cheap data recovery software that will allow you to see the entire contents of the hard drive...not just the stuff that Windows/Mac wants you to see. It will then allow you to select the "deleted" songs and save them to a DIFFERENT hard drive or a flash drive. Remember, if your data has been deleted, anything you save to the hard drive containg the songs could reduce the chances of reading the deleted data...this includes saving any files to that hard drive or even visiting websites. Also, if you go to the following path: C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\My Documents\My Music\iTunes There may be a "previous libraries" folder that will have an i-tunes database file called something like "iTunes Library.itl" This file may be the file with information about all her songs. If you double click it, it will launch i-tunes and hopefully restore her library. Good Luck!Your secrets are the true reflection of who you really are... AliMac 0 #9 January 24, 2009 Is it just gone out of the itunes or is it not on the ipod anymore? if she hasn't synched the ipod since the music disappeared you may be ok. I lost all my music when my harddrive crashed and I had to get a new computer. If you get on youtube search transferring music from ipod to computer, there are ways to get all the music off the ipod onto the computer and then reimported into itunes. i did it and only 10 or so of my 1200 songs didn't import
chiquita24 0 #10 January 25, 2009 I have know idea how only 25 songs were displayed. My guess is that somehow those 25 songs were checked and the rest got deleted. She doesn't have all the music on her i-pod only the 25 songs that show up in itunes. I don't think any of it was purchased. Most came from old cd's, so hopefully I can re-build her library. And you're right, I should have asked for help before doing a restore. Did we fuck anything else up doing that?

murrays 0 #12 January 25, 2009 You know, I don't know exactly what a System Restore does but any time you think you have lost data it's just a good idea not to do anything. Have you looked through the Apple Support forums or asked for help there? Is the iPod still under warranty? If it is, give Apple Support a call. As Tink asks...Mac or PC? On the Mac, when I delete a song it asks if I want to remove the file or move it to the Trash. If you are on a PC I'm guessing the same think might happen.....take a look in the Recycle bin. I have several songs in my Trash on my Mac that I deleted a couple of days ago. I think that you will find better advice on the Apple Support discussion pages or by calling Apple Support if that is a possibility. Tink may have some ideas for you if you are on a PC...I use a Mac and am not much help on the PC side of things.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
