Scoop 0 #1 January 5, 2009 Went mountain biking the other day for some exercise and to have a look around the coast. Just amazing! Standing on the White Cliffs of Dover watching the sunset having just been exploring all the WW2 sites was awesome. The numbered pics are off Google Earth. The only camera we had was on our phones but this is some of the site we saw and the ones we missed! 1) Me on cliff edge 2) Rifle range 3) Pillbox 4) Abbotts cliff sound mirror 5) Coastal observation point

Zep 0 #7 January 5, 2009 Ahh, that brings back memories, I did more than a few years in the ROC. Spent more than a few weekends living down in the bunker. Still the benifit outweighed the countless hours counting clouds, Loads of free and nearly free jumps at Nethers, Weston and Dunkerswell. Gone fishing

Scoop 0 #10 January 5, 2009 Thanks, I can't take credit for hardly any of them but the history on my doorstep is pretty incredible. One of those situations because its always been there you don't think much of it. Was nice to have a hunt around. A couple of the bunkers appeared to be accesible so might return sometime but prob need air fed masks.
jumpwally 0 #11 January 5, 2009 Does anyone know how exactly these sound mirrors were supposed to work ? and did they ? Thankssmile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
Scoop 0 #12 January 5, 2009 Hey, yeah they did work. It was a primitive type of early warning against incoming aircraft. I believe the quick advances of technology in wartime meant they were soon made obsolete with the introduction of RADAR http://www.soundmirrors.org/ http://www.ajg41.clara.co.uk/mirrors/dungeness.html
