Fun with speed cameras, teen-style

There used to be a lot of stories like this one — about how the vast majority of speeding cameras are empty boxes. In Maryland, it seems it’s even better.

According to Ars Technica, Maryland teens have discovered that Montgomery County’s cameras can’t distinguish between real license plates and laser-printed ones. So kids are making up fake versions of their enemies’ plates, pasting them over their own plates and speeding past the cameras.

The “Speed Pimping Game” gets the other person a $40 citation. And parents are upset, The Montgomery County Sentinel reports:

“This game is very disturbing,” the parent said. “Especially since unsuspecting parents will also be victimized through receipt of unwarranted photo speed tickets.
The parent said that “our civil rights are exploited,” and the entire premise behind the Speed Camera Program is called into question as a result of the growing this fad among students.

The parents are calling on the county council to withdraw the cameras, which, they say, were only instituted as a way to make money without having to pay cops to drive the beat.

That would be a victory for privacy rights. Thanks, kids!

I agree - laughed when I read it. That is a great way to get rid of the latest law enforcement revenue scam. More power to them.

Also, how do they prove who the driver of the car is anyway - the registered owner obviously is not always the driver.

Yep, they get you on a technicality... it's an administrative fine, not a criminal offense, thus the registered owner of the car (per license plate) is the one responsible for paying the administrative fine, but there are no points associated with it.....

I heard from a reputable source, you know friend of a friend, about one here in Tauranga.
The speed camera was spoted in the box so some enterprising young ones taped up thier plate with electrical tape so as not to be identifiable.
They then loaded up the car and went past the camera to set it of.
When the photo was developed the police were presented with a photo full of boobs and bums.B|

What happens if you just don't pay it?
If not a criminal offense, can they issue a warrant for your arrest?

They'll ding your credit and sent it to debt collectors.

Personally I think that red light cameras and speed cameras are simply a tax that the people were not able to have representation for! Real traffic enforcement that makes a difference is an officer in a marked unit enforcing traffic. People slow down for the car/officer and typically drive better.

I hope to god that we never get anything like that here. There's a large college town near here that has red light cameras. They're the bane of even the cops that work that town. Especially since they have been issued red light camera tickets too. While in a police car. While on duty. While responding to an emergency!

That's not a hard ticket to disprove - unless the car they used is the same as yours.

Yeah, but to disprove, the owner of the "plate" has to go to Court and challenge the "collection" action.

Wouldn't you have to take them to small claim court?
If it's not a traffic offense....

:S

In Georgia, the red-light cameras are placed under local town ordinance. However, back in April the Legislation forced the towns to "apply for a permit" to install the cameras, under the disguise of a "uniform system" (the reality is that the State goverment wanted a piece of the action and enacted a law to make sure they knew what's going on and can carve out some money from this racket, see Red Lights Debate).
