question for clumsy wine drinkers

Recommended Posts

i love wine, but it seems that a lot of wine glasses get broke around my house. i bought a couple glasses from pottery barn for $12 (one for red and one for white), but both are now broken. my mom gave me some glasses from who-knows-where, but they are broken too. somehow i ended up with a cordial glass from somewhere, and it got broke within a month of aquiring it. i've seen ads in rv cataloges for acrylic glasses that won't break. they are supposed to feel just like reall glass, but do they really? are there wine glasses that can stand up too the rigors of my non-coordinated household? tonight i bought a couple of glasses from walmart that seem pretty hefty, but they are a little big, i only got 2 1/4 glasses out of a bottle of wine.

I think you can still use coffee cups without looking too much like a drunk.:D I've drank from plastic wine glasses and don't notice a difference of taste. you can save the glass for those special bottles that you would really like served in glass.

We have a set of the stemless glasses with 4 slightly different patterns, so it's easy to know who's glass is who's if having a dinner party and you're all a little sloshed. We also go to a lot of the local wineries, and several of them offer free wine glasses with a purchase, so I have about a dozen freebies, if they break, oh well... it's just an excuse to go drink some more to get free glasses :)

Cost Plus World Market. I picked up a bunch of them for $1.00 each last year. (I have at least one party around Christmas.) They look just fine- same as the more expensive ones I was replacing- and I don't get upset if one is accidently broken.

Crystal is sturdier than glass but it doesn't so much break as it explodes when you drop them. Acrylic are fine if you want to make sure you hand wash them and not put them in the dishwasher. Over time, dishwashers will make them look cloudy.

You could try getting glasses from a restaurant supply place where they'd be cheaper and sturdier.

You could do what we do - don't drink wine out of wine glasses. We use the small, heavy bottomed, straight side juice glasses that hotels and restaurants use. More specifically - they're what casinos use in Vegas to put your free cocktails in. My set came from the Venetian. (I don't think they sell them, though...)

It's actually what I prefer to drink wine out of. I like white wine and I like it really, really cold and it stays colder longer in the smaller, thicker glass.

We have wine glasses and, for really special occasions, because my husband and I are very strange people, we have a gorgeous matching set of jewel encrusted communion chalices. They're metal so they don't break. They also freak people out. You could try that.
If you can't laugh at yourself, I'll be happy to do it for you.

I keep Riedel Vinum series at the house, Riedel stemless at the dropzone, and a constant supply of one of mankind's greatest inventions, Wine Away at both. I generally break a couple a year, but nothing to get too worked up over (except the last one, which I broke over my girlfriend's head :$:D).

I use to break a lot of glasses when I got drunk all the time.:D

surprisingly they don't get dropped or broken when while drinking, they usualy get broke because someone will put them in the sink and then someone else, who isn't tall enough to see what's in the sink, will throw something in there. they also get broken when my wife puts them in the dishwasher instead of washing them by hand. (she also puts my good knife in the dishwasher.>:()

We get cheap Ikea glasses. They are decent enough shape and look wise, fairly resistant, and cheap enough to replace when they break.

+1

We used those for years. @ $1.00 each the were great.
Now we've been going to Specks wine tasting 1st Tuesday of each month, and you get a Reidel Chard glass included in the $10 price.
We have bunches of those now.;)

Yep, why pay too much for a glass? IKEA or Target always have inexpensive wine glasses. So does the thrift store.:D The only expensive glass we have is Valinda's special Samuel Adams beer testing glass, carefully shaped and laser etched for maximum beverage enjoyment. . . but that's all scientific and stuff.:)

Or you can just stick your mouth under the spout on the box. That's what Remi does. :)
