Healthy substitute for Gatorade?

My son drinks a lot of Gatorade, usually one of those large bottles a day. He also plays a lot of soccer and sweats a lot. After practices, his shirts are so wet it looks like he was caught in a rainstorm! He told me he wants to wean himself off Gatorade because he doesn't like drinking all the sugar that is in it and drink more water. That's all fine and good, but I'm concerned about him missing out on the good additives that are in Gatorade especially because he sweats so much. Does anyone know of a suppliment he could take that would help when he switches to drinking more water?

Drinking water is the best way to go, but with the amount of activity your son does, it would be wise to add a supplement to his fluid intake. Essential Electrolytes are needed for cell stability and replacement of lost minerals.

He had one very scary incident where he collapsed after a game from dehydration and was taken out in an ambulance, resulting in him having to get 2 IV bags in him to balance him out. He's also had issues with cramping before. The amount that he sweats is not normal and he doesn't eat a typical diet (no junk food). I'm just trying to be proactive. :)

It's good that he has noticed Gatorade is loaded with sugar. However he does not need to stop drinking it completely.

Gatorade is designed to be used with water. A glass of gatorade should be followed by a glass of water. Or how about you just skip all that and add the water to the gatorade and be done with it all at once.

That is what I did. That is what a former NFL nutrionist told me to do, and it works as far as I'm concerned.

Some of the flavors do not taste great watered down, but most do, especially the original flavors. The citrus is my fav watered down though.

At first it'll taste just like you would think, watered down gatorade, and he probably won't like it. But if he drinks that for a week, and then goes back to drinking straight gatorade he'll see why he should water it down.

And a plus for you is guess what, he'll be using half the amount of gatorade as usual, which means you have to buy half as much.

Water and fruits if his diet is adequate he wont need extra electrolytes

Drinking water should be good. I like Vitamin Water, because I don't really like Gatorade all that much. Have you seen those Juice Plus things for kids? They have a lot of vitamins just like a serving of fruit or vegetables.

Funny you say that, he doesn't like the G2 because he said it just tastes watered down. I've already thought about how much money I'll save, I must spend at least $20/week on just Gatorade! :S

G2 is not the same though. I'm telling you try it. Orange is a good one to use, and the lemon lime isn't bad. Grape, blahhhhhh. The a.m. ones are not bad as well to water down.

There is a electrolyte supplement called Heed that is a good alternative, not the cheapest thing, but most good things are not.

From what you've written it sounds like he just isn't getting enough water in him. Gatorade is served with water on the sidelines for a reason. Gatorade does not rehydrate you, it gives you electrolytes and carbs for energy, the hydration comes from you adding water to it or after it so that these electrolytes and carbs can get where they need to be.

I eschew just about all sodas and energy drinks. Coffee or tea in the morning, water when I'm thirsty, beer maybe later. :)

And thats why sport's diets advice shouldnt come from the peanut gallery.



When training in the summer I actually take what is basically a salt pill, 3 of them. And trust me I have a good deal of sodium coming in other times.

Try Propel. It has the electrolytes, but not the sugar and calories. Gatorade also makes Rain, which has fewer calories by far than plain Gatorade. We drink a ton of this kind of shit when setting up pyro in the summer heat. If you are just replacing your massive sweat losses with plain water only, you can get in some electrolyte problems. I agree with Squeak that fruits would be useful, but they are sometimes not practical to have on hand in large quantities in the field.

Zipp Fizz is an energy drink, not a sports drink, or a drink you take to stay hydrated.

Torch hydrate is another product I know of that would work as a substitute, but again, not as cheap as just watering down some gatorade.

during my wife's Bikram yoga certification course, she was doing 3 to 40 hours of yoga a day, in a 110 heated studio. it was critical that she kept her electrolytes up. she used cytomax. on the last week, she stopped, just didnt feel like going to the store for the last week. she collapsed in class, and had to be brought out.

i work outside in the desert and use cytomax. seems to really help with me not getting tired. my wife now used just some lemon juice in water, with a pinch of salt....this will bring your electrolytes up too. and its all natural.

We use emergen-C. Mix it with water and it contains the electrolytes and extra vit. C. They have several flavors available but orange is the best one i have found. We get it at costco or the grocery store on the vitamin/supplement aisle.:)
