Treejumps 0 #1 December 2, 2005 Well I finally bought a 2 needle machine. It was 1/4" gauge, and the parts came in yesterday for 3/16" gauge. Easy enough to swap the parts, but there is clearly more to do to make the new gauge work. Any tips or advice for getting this thing to work with the new gauge? I knew it would be more than the parts swap, but the manual doesn't cover this. Thanks
CReWLL 0 #2 December 2, 2005 What is you question exactly? I've changed many and some go easy and some not so. If the gears are ready to slide on the lower shaft, that would be great. Sometimes they are pretty tight after a few decades of never having to move.
Treejumps 0 #3 December 2, 2005 Basically, after you put on the new needle clamp, feed dog, throat plate, and presser foot, what adjustments are needed to have everything line up properly for operation?
rushmc 23 #4 December 2, 2005 There are two manuals listed on the Singer site. One is the operators manual and the other one should be the service or tech manual. When you change gauges you have to re time the machine. The details are fairly clear if they have the service manual for that model on the site. Or, I know the 112W tech manual is on the site as I have one. Look at that one as the parts underneath may be the same as the 212W. If they are the same you should be able to retime the machine your self (but it can be a pain) Hope that helps Marc"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." rushmc 23 #5 December 2, 2005 heer is the link. the timing instructions start on page 12 http://parts.singerco.com/IPsvcManuals/212W140.pdf"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Treejumps 0 #6 December 2, 2005 Thanks Marc, I have that manual and will work on the timing.
Treejumps 0 #7 December 2, 2005 After reading the manual it appears that I need to move the sewing hooks (doesn't look too hard). The timing may or may not need adjusted, but the hooks need to be moved to accomodate the new gauge. Who would of thought, read the manual. Cya. You need to adjust the dwell and timing of the hooks to needle ratio. The hooks need to just touch the needle recesses without actually striking the needle at just the right moment without dropping the bottom thread. It's gonn'a take time and error to make it happen with varying thicknesses of fabrics and tapes. It's actually one of "the dark arts" that is rarely spoken of. Trust me on on this one. Mick. PeteS 0 #9 December 3, 2005 Look and see if the lower shaft that runs horizontal has grooves to keep gear timing, if so your job just got easier. If you have not changed needle bar height, timing will be easier. Hook to needle clearance is critical, I start with the thread thickness and see from there. Align your gears centered, axis to axis so they do not self destruct. Take your belt off, (the machine not your pants ) so you can spin the hand wheel. rushmc 23 #10 December 3, 2005 More than likely you will have to adjust or tweak the timing. The set screws that hold either of the gears can be loosened and turned to make that adjustment. Get one side set and then find a way to hold the parts from turning and then adjust the other side. Read far enough in front of the adjustment section and behind the adjustments section as other adjustments have to be in sink as well. Can be frustrating but I can get it anybody can. Treejumps 0 #13 December 3, 2005 Wow, that wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Moved the entire hook assembly closer to the needle and then timed it. Put it on the machine and it stiches great. It took far longer to modify the opening in the table to accomodate this machine (existing table) than to time the machine. A little tension tweaking and I should be ready to put the rt angle binder on. Thanks for all your tips! You have less money in it than I have in the older one you and I were talking about.
