I heard a lot of these same things when my brother died. Never once thought they were stupid. Some people are just at a loss for words.

Appreciate the gesture, it's the thought that counts.

Mostly, people don't say things to hurt us but after a loss, there really isn't anything that they could say that will help and silence wont help either. They just want to easy our pain in the best way that they can.
