vskydiver 0 #11 September 11, 2008 I bought an HP about a year and a half ago. It had some difficulties as sometimes these things do, but HP was really good about taking care of it and fast. They even called me the next day to make sure everything was still going OK. Then six months out of warranty I had problems again. HP still took care of it as if it were still covered and fixed things promptly. If I were to buy another laptop, I'd get another HP. Their service was fast and prompt. I didn't have to wait for hours on the phone for a tech guy. If they couldn't fix it they sent me a box to send it back to them so they could fix it and they only took 2 working days to get it back to me. (Both times!) I am very impressed with HP. DrewEckhardt 0 #12 September 11, 2008 QuoteOn an $1100 or so budget . . . With what other requirements? Do you want to lug the thing around on a bicycle? Do you want a desktop replacement you can use in morethan one room? Do you want a lot of battery life to watch DVDs on trans-oceanic flights? Do you use it for software development or just visiting web sites? I bought a Dell 1420 because it's reasonably small, big enough to do real work, fits 4G of memory, has a dual core processor for software development, and a 9 cell battery pack that stays charged through most longer business meetings. I'd have spent a lot less money and gotten a bigger screen if I needed something for around the house.

I have the slightly smaller version of Valinda's HP - smaller screen and keyboard (HP Pavilion DV2000t). The only problem I've had with it is I got a bum battery - it would run out in about 15 minutes; I've replaced it with a knockoff (non-HP) battery and it's fine now - I get about the battery life I'd expect on an average consumer-grade notebook - around 3 hours. The only thing I don't like about the HPs is where they place the wireless toggle switch - it's right in the front of the laptop, so that it's very easy to accidentally hit it if you're actually holding the laptop on your lap. Otherwise, I've been pretty happy with mine as well."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. If all it is for to do documents, internet, email, and other low level stuff then one for $500 will more then do well no need to over buy. What level of pc use and self support are you comfortable with? If you want good support get a dell from the business line not their home line. Dell uses off shore support for their home PC line (India) their business support is U.S. based and quicker response. I got a clearance Acer for $450 came with 120 Gb of storage 2 gb ram and will do every thing I need audio editing some games, since I don't heavy game with my laptop or do Video editing. I saved the $$ for other things and didn’t over buy. I buy a new system every 2 years this way. I do I.T. consulting and support and I have seen problems with pretty much every brand but good with every brand. I deploy over 3000 PC a years for corporations and refreshes so I’ve seen it all. I have owned HP, Dell, Acer, IBM, Lovano, now days with what even low end Laptops come with there is not such a huge need as in the past to get bleeding endge for more power and memory In 2002 I had a HP with 30 gb storage 1.2 Ghz and 512 ram running XP pro and cost me 2200 no I just spent $450 for and Acer 120 gb storage, 2.4 Ghz, and 2 gb of ram and still running XP proSO this one time at band camp.....
